I was on here a couple of weeks ago asking advice about a bug I found on craigs. U were all extremely helpful. Well the owner I thought was asking way too much for a vehicle that wouldn't start and had other issues as well. Then the owner emailed me back and came way down in price but another guy wanted it and I had to let them know right away, so I told them I would take it. As it would have it fate intervened as there was a death in my business partners family and I couldn't go back for it and told them to sell to the other guy. I was pretty bummed but that's life. SO I'm telling this story to my neighbor and he says something like..."What?!!! You're looking for a Bug? There's been one sitting about four miles from here with a for sale sign on it for the last 3 years! And I looked at it and it is nice! Guy Keeps it in his garage and in drive in summer but it's always covered!" SO I ask my neighbor to please call the guy ASAP! He does and doesn't get ahold of him toll late but Phil, the guy whose bug it is finally calls me after ten PM.
Its a 63 from Bakersfield that made its way here a few years ago. There have been three owners as far. A coupe from Bakersfield, another guy form Bakersfield then Phil the guy like four miles from me.

Phil was really nice and spent about two hours with me telling me the nuances with the car. I really appreciated it. He loves bugs too but his wife doesn't haha!

There are some crazy records about oil changes, tire, air filter, service all hand written form the 80s. I have old registration cards and even the old black cali plates.

btw, this ended up being my bday present. My bday was last week and my wife and i went to visit my brother in SoCal. We went to the 37 bug in in Irwindale but got there late so most of the vendors were packing up but we saw a ton of bugs and buses and races!!! It was soooooo cool!

I can't thank u all enuff for your guidance and I am so excited. I am so excited!

How do I post pix? Do I have to link to a photo hosting site?

I am currently reading the muir book but will soon be bombarding u all with questions and updates lol. This bug has a fe rust spots but in most places the metal looks brand new!

Also, I see the engine number on the engine. Where is the Vin number on the car? I remember being told its under the front driver's seat but the whole car floor is covered in like a black pad type thing. Is this a bad thing? I can tear it off but it comes off in pieces. Its like a tarry cardboard or something? Pan looks solid and the metal around the hump where the shifter is...haha...that's how green I am, is all covered in it too. and that metal there looks perfect like the day it was made. So I wasn't too concerned but was wondering if it was sound dampening or covering a problem like rust or something.

VIN number on the pan is under the rear seat, on the tunnel right in front of the inspection plate. You don't need to peel any of the tarboard up to see it, though it may be covered in grease. Wipe it off and the VIN will be right there. We need pics!! You can post them here in thesamba gallery or on a photo hosting site like photobucket.

I just found the gallery link. Its kinda small to see the link on the main forum but I found it. And I am going to post pix ASAP!

I've owned so many cars and why am I so excited about the dam little bug? I LOVE IT!

And it drives like a flipping rocket!

If you've ever heard of Jim's custom VW's he's like three miles from me. He always has ads in the back of vw mags for parts and service so anything i really get stuck on I'll take it there but want to do most everything myself.

You must of walked rite past me at bug in.

Congratulations on finding & buying a bug. Sounds like you found the one.

The vin numbers are normally located behind the spare tire in the trunk area and the second is under the rear seat on the tunnel.

The card bord is known as tar bord and is a factory sound deadener.

That's wut I was thinking lol but obviously the same thing as you! I ripped out some of the liner on the sides and the padding looks like it could have been installed yesterday but I have a sensitive sense of smell and want to get all of that musty mildew clothing type smell out. Trying to post pix now.

I have a 63 sedan. I love it. Stock 40hp runs like a top. I placed the fuel filter under the gas tank on mine. It's kind of a pain to change though. You should probably look into getting the screen that goes in the tank also.

By the way, nice car.

Looks like the og color was Pearl White? Nice score and have fun with it. Maybe someone else can verify, but shouldn't the fuel filter be before the fuel pump? Congrats!!!
