Now that I have removed the fiberglass insulation from the side panel in my Weekender, I find that the fiberglass was held in place by contact cement.
What would be the best solvent to remove the contact cement so that my FatMat will stick? I don't want to remove the paint. |

Dried, old contact adhesive is a bitch to get off---
You want something aggresive---but now you don't want to mess up some paint in the process.
Big toss up.
If all else fails, soak it in STP for 8 months.
The fiberglass will drop off with the old glue still attached. _________________ T.K.

| I just found a can of Goof-Off for removing labels. It seems to work. The only problem is I'll never be able to have children. |

| Try plain white vinegar. It works wonders with adhesives. It's also handy for desolving epoxy and cleaning hands. |

I would use a plastic scraper to remove the fiberglass and chunks of glue then leave the rest. There's no reason you can't install the fatmat right over the top of old glue residue. It will stay in place and not affect anything. Saves making a big mess. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

Try a dull razor blade . It will get the chunky bits off ,then just glue over it .
Trying a chemical if it lifts it will just make a big mess . _________________ 89 Syncro Tristar "Swedish"

The Goof-Off did a pretty good job. I had the van opened up to the breeze so I wouldn't have to breath it. When I took the door panel off the sliding door and removed the fiberglass, it had contact cement also. I used a putty knife to scrape it clean as much as possible. I may just glue the FatMat down on top to the residue. Thanks to all of you. I'll try the vinegar too.
My brain is already shot. How else can you explain a 66 year old man still playing with old Volkswagens. |

Another for the 3M Adhesive Remover in the white/red can. In spray can format, it is easier to use on a vertical surface. Won't damage paint, which is the design purpose. Way faster than goo gone and citrus solutions. Have fresh air circulating.
