fixed my fuel gauge and clock today. clock was just thermal fuse and oil to make it tick again. but did a wright up on how i fixed the fuel gauge below.
opened up the gauge, nothing stood out to be wrong but threw testing something was wrong with it. so then i went to a type 3 fuel gauge. it tested fine, and worked with the sender. the base components are very similar so then the problem was to get it in to the ghia gauge housing.
here is the base gauge components. ghia one on the left and type 3 on the right with ghia base. every thing comes apart. only 2 solder joints need to be broken/rejoined
(left) ghia sender, (middle) complete type 3, (right) type 3 with ghia base.
(type 3 left, ghia right) the needles pry off and the little thing on the ghia gauge (in pic) prys off as well. it then presses on to the little shaft to move the needle.
(type 3 left, ghia right) i used some m3 weather stripping adhesive to glue the needle on. i didnt want anything that would permanently keep the needle on.
finally it fit back inside and works perfect. i dont know if it has the dreaded type 3 needle bounce but well see.

Got this set of retractable seat belts from cip1.com. they did not fit even though the website said they did. first i had to grind out all the holes to fit the og vw bolts, washers and plastic spacers because the mounting hardware they give u is crap. then the belt was 31 inches too long and would not retract all the way, so i had to get the extra cut off and resewed. but in the end they fit and look good.

Weird I got a set and the length was good but the bracket they sent was the wrong configuration. |

Better hope that you don't gain a couple hundred pounds, or you'll be sorry that you removed all that extra length.
Your Ghia is looking mighty fine, indeed - Nice work! |

I'm kinda jealous that it seams you have surpassed me bodywise. Then again I assume since your 17 you live at home. I'm 31 and my car is at my parents 30 miles away and I work 10 hour days so I only get to work 2 days a week. All my bodywork is done for the most part. Just need to sandblast the interior, going to POR-15 most of the interior panels since I am covering most of the panels with sound deadening material.
But great progress, I wish I had a sweet ghia when I was 17-18 trust me it is a hit with the ladies. My 70 rust bucket when I bought it was a hit with the college girls, so a smooth one would of been too much to handle. |
You're not alone. I'm 60 and eveb with max ambition I'm not sure I could do what this kid is doing. There really IS hope for the next generation |

Would the Hummer belts work in a Ghia like they do in the convertible bugs? _________________ Chuck in Socal

Can't wait for my ghia to start to look like this! Looks awesome, inside and out! My ghia is it's original orange but has lots of patina, that a camera can't see |

Fantastic Scotty!
I'll bet you have the coolest ride in the lot
Reminds me of my Ghia in the school lot back in the day.

OK, your gonna have to pronounce Wollochet for us. If I have trouble with that one being here in Washington, imagine how the east coast people will butcher it.
Seriously though, the car looks REALLY nice! |
