Heres a story for ya.
1999
19yo trustafarian buys a bus for a grand in Tucson - dumps 20k into it.
October 4th, 2001
rear ends nissan @ 15 MPH.
Stores car with very patient parents.
2012 - sitting for 11 years - im now halfway growed up. ready again.
a few questions for the experienced/opinionated guys out there -
do i need a new front clip or can/should this be repaired?
ive got 8k in the paint and body from the original resto. there is no bondo on this thing and i'd like to keep it that way - if i can afford it.
any recommendations for body shops in the bay area?
(i am no longer a trustafarian, so reasonable prices will matter)
any advice on shipping from AZ to Berkeley? im looking at like 800 bucks to get it trailered out right now.
i learned my lesson - what kind of disk brake kit to buy? - the wife is only gonna sign off on this if i can make it a *little* more practical and safe.
images coming up next. |

You will need to replace the nose panel. Go with a good used nose panel (I have a good used one that I might sell). At least one of the A-pillars is probably bent. Is the front floor damaged? _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Floor is not damaged. , but the A pillars must be out a little cause both my front doors are contacting at the bottom a little. the heater tube seems allright from what i can tell. below the seam on the bottom of the nose is not damaged. i finally figured out why those two metal tabs are supposed to bolt to the bumper, as i got a big frownie face with my freshly powdercoated bumper on contact. yet another lesson learned.
i looked through on other posts for nose replacement and it seems like a doable job - particularly if i can keep it to the door/bottom/under window frame seams. what would you want for one and are you in the bay area/cali? |

I grew up in Orinda but moved up to Chico, years ago. It is about 100 miles north of Sacramento.
I've removed several nose panels and it was not fun but not real difficult: two rows of spot welds where the panel bends up twice beneath the window sills; crimps at each side over the A-pillars and the bottom pried back and the spot welds drilled out; and where the top side/front of the panel goes over each A-pillar is difficult to remove.
Once, I read a story about the total number of spot welds that a man had counted on an old VW bus: it was some huge number. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Feel like doing one more? haha it would be an adventure...whacha think about those A-pillars? could i flex those forward and weld in supports while the new skin is installed to keep them in place, and even hope that they would stay that way? doesnt seem like replacing them is something i want or need to do. i know people with spot welders and im allright with mig/tig. how did you re-seam the seams without it looking re-seamed? seems tricky. |

As far as safety, I'd say a dual-circuit master cylinder conversion would be much cheaper and easier than discs. It's also a huge safety upgrade, in that the front and rear brake systems are totally separate.
Shoulder or lap belts can be installed, too. Just search the split bus forum for info on belts and a master cylinder conversion. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

The A pillars will be tweaked but that can be worked out with a porta-power once the front skin is off.
Take it apart at the seams. It's just a lot of tedious work.
Make sure you hire someone who has either done it before or is a VW magician. |
