yes. they are mostly for show
if I make side bars they will attach to the body lift and the roll cage. ugly but functional _________________ 73 Beetle, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 1776, Solex 34 Pict-3, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

Yes, mine go through the quarter panel and then attach to the cage. bent both really bad rock crawling(don't ask) a couple weeks ago, no body damage and we pulled the bent nerf bars back out with a winch. _________________ I got a Volkswagen for my wife....Best trade I ever made! |

It didnt.
I wish i had pics of the damage. It bent the bar quite a bit. i had to cut out the bent piece and weld in a straight piece. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

you made the classic mistake. Should have pressed the clutch, flicked the wheel, while dumping the clutch out at HIGH rpms to slide that bitch around the corner.
I love doing that on dirt roads. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

We gotta be careful with our swingaxles. gotta make sure you have a "smooth" road to do it on, and that you are getting full power out of the motor so it helps hold down the swing axles. if done right, its super fun.
BUT please, be careful doing it in the first place. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

i used the store bought nerf bars like curb feelers. going around trees, the bars would let you know that you were getting too close. they are not a good jack point for a high lift, stuck down the mud jack. i don't have a body lift to connect too but have thought about a beam system that would connect the nerf bars on both sides of the car and mount to the bottom of the car and tunnel. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

I was able to use my body lift to attach my side bars. I think if you used a good sized tubing you could attach it to the tunnel and bolt to your side bars and it would be nice and stout., i still would be worried about hitting hard enough to bend it and your quarter panel though. _________________ My build:

On a railbuggy thread the DesertDave guy said a lot of "tree bars" on race vehicles are made of a slightly smaller tubing and are removable, so they have some give, as opposed to welding a bunch of rigid bars that distort the main cage when hit. He said it was easier to replace a small portion that was designed to take impact than jolting the entire cage system. Just a thought, and might be of some help if one was designing something that tied into a roll bar... _________________ '59 Beetle.
