Quick question,
I have 74 bus and I just finished the subaru conversion, I had it all ready to go and thought it all done right to find the my motor was not turning, took a better look at it and my cluctch is touching my bell housing.....I put a vanagon clutch on , was that not the right clutch for the 74 bus transmission?
Or did I buy the wrong adapter?
Thanks in avance. |

Wrong clutch/flywheel, you'll either need the flywheel off the 74 or a later bellhousing and starter. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You need to find yourself a '76 or later Bay/Vanagon bellhousing and starter. |

....the reason being that a '74 had either a 210mm or a 215mm flywheel and clutch depending on the month of production, and a '76 and newer Bus and Vanagon both had a 228mm flywheel and matching clutch components. You need either all earlier parts, or all later parts....a mix match won't work as you unfortunately found out. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

a measurement of your rod would be extremely useful. |

Should have explained my point better, but with the more powerful engine I would suggest keeping the stronger 228 mm clutch and finding the later bellhousing and matching items needed to be able to use it. |

I ran into this issue on my watercooled swap. when the engine with adaptor plate was tightened onto the trans, it would not turn. Loosen nuts and it was free again. It ended up needing the input shaft trimmed about 10mm to keep from binding in the pilot bearing. I hope this helps. |

That's a good point and it's in the Kennedy docs. It depends which trans you have. For the 091 shortening was needed. For an 002, I'm not sure.

It also depends which engine you have. I had to trim my 002 input shaft with a JH-code VW inline, but I know of an ALH TDI that didn't need trimming with an 002 transaxle.
.. all of which is fairly irrelevant to the OP's Subaru swap. |
