hey all 68 beetle 1600
so anyways heres the deal..
i recently read in a post regarding the heater hose and heat exchangers and i realized that i should defintly be running air into my heater boxes to provide maximum cooling efficiency. i learned that by running the car the way i currently am which is with the fan shroud heater duct holes plugged up and with the heat box just sitting there , that it will heat up the heat box and warm up my motor specifically the heads. this would not be a problem except that my heat hose cannot stretch down far enough to the heat exchanger without rubbing up and squishing against a pipe in the exhuast manifold en route to the heater box hole.
im using this http://www.jbugs.com/category/empi-vw-exhausts-systems.html the left manifold pipe sitings just underneath and between the tin where i need to shove the heater hose and blocks me from connecting it.
i hope i ddint' lose anyone ,
is there any other alternatives to getting the stock exhuast back ( too costly)
will j tubes allow me to remove the stock heater box and and not conflict with my exhuast manifold ?
any other type of advice would be awesome
thanks
i just dont' want my buggy running hot summer is just about here |

I don't know what is up with some of these exhaust systems, maybe they assume you'll be running j tubes.
I wrapped my heater hoses with gorilla tape, still burns a hole through it but not as bad. It's better then no cooling...
However, I recently picked up a used stock muffler on the cheap at a local meet, I'm just about done cleaning it up, then I'll paint it and pop it in. Try to look up some local junk yards, meets, and guys with a bunch of VWs in their back yards. _________________ 71 Super Beetle

It's just the only way to run equal length runners to a collector.
You just need to use the aluminium style tubes not the stock paper ones, they wont burn if they touch the pipes
It's tight but there is enough room to fit them down passed the pipes and onto the heaterbox spigots. |

I used the aluminum air tubes, and I always had to crush one of them a little to get the tube to fit. Still had great heat. I have also used two short tubes and connected them together through the rear cooling tin with the stock steel coupling that fits into the stock VW muffler. This kept the air tubes from getting cut by the rear tin.
I have also heard of getting an aftermarket rear tin with no holes and then drilling new holes in an area less impeded by the header. Haven't actually tried that one myself so I can't say how well that works. _________________ Brian

Are you keeping your heater boxes because you want heat in the car (interior)?? If you don't care about heat... go with J-tubes.
I wasn't clear WHICH of the headers in that link you have, but just match the tube diameter and get a J-tube with a same diameter as your primary pipes.
You will also need to cover up the holes in the rear tin to prevent hot air from coming back into the engine compartment from below. Best option here is to buy new tin w/o holes or wel up the holes. You need to make every effort to keep the warm air below the tinwork... and the cool air above. _________________ AshMan40
