Decklid catch

Is there a way to keep the catch from chipping, when using the t handle? I've seen the tennis ball trick, but isn't great when driving. And I don't want to run a stand off. I've thought of drilling out the spot welds, chroming it, the using small screws to reattach it?

Maybe attach some rubber to the latch, keeping it from making metal-to-metal contact.
