Asking the choir that sings here each and every day.......
Mine is a totally stock,(not lowered) 2nd owner 64 coupe.
Have had it for over 20 years and from what I can tell the
Shocks on my girl have never been replaced. Ball joints and tires
are fine as is the tire pressure. Needless to say, ride is a little bumpy.
What does the Samba choir recommend for replacements?
Brand? Gas or not? Positive and Negatives would be greatly
appreciated? She's still running the 1300 motor. I'm not planning
on heading to Laguna Seca maybe Pacific Coast Highway!
Muchos Thank You's!!

I originally installed Bilstein gas shocks. Way to hard for a stock ride. Swithcked to Boge oil. Much better _________________ Retired Sambanista |

Agreed. Boge oil for ride quality. I haven't found any gas shock that works well in the light front end of a ghia. Even my light-pressure KYB GR2s, which are more comfy than Gas-A-Justs, are pretty stiff in front. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

Great! Looks like Boge Oil it is. I read that these are the
closest to factory or originals out there on the market.
Would most of the Choir here agree?
Thanks for the answers kingk. and sactojesse!

And since we are on this topic, what is best for lowered with adjustable beam in front? _________________ Eric Meldrum

For an adjustable front beam, you will need shorter shocks. I'm running the KYB GR2 low pressure gas shocks in front w/ my adjustable front beam and they are still pretty stiff, but I don't mind.

I don't often recommend anything made by EMPI, but they do make a lowered/shorter fluid front shock that will likely ride better than the GR2s I have, but I haven't personally tried them.

Not all adjustable beams will need the short shocks. I bought them first and could not get them to extend enough to fit. Got the regular length KYB GR2's and they fit fine. I am lowered with drop spindles and narrowed adjustable beam.

agreed with c21darrel
have to return my lowered shocks for the same reason, i couldnt extend mine enough to fit even with the beam adjusted all the way down and no drop spindles. |

That is what I was thinking. So, is there any reason NOT to go with the oil shocks mentioned earlier in this thread for the adjustable front beam? _________________ Eric Meldrum

Good topic. I'll have to address my rear shocks and perhaps even the fronts come winter time.
I currently have coil over shocks on the rear and I'm pretty sure they're a main contributor to my somewhat rough ride.
There just seems to be a lack of shock absortion with those coil overs.....
I actually like the "stance" of my Ghia at this point and figure the rear may sag when I switch over to oil filled shocks.
I dunno, will cross that bridge when I gets to it, I rekon

Not sure if Ghias are the same as a type 1, but Aircooled.net sells a properly valved GR2 for lowered applications. Most places sell a way too stiff shock. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1776.

Yes, that's what I have on the front of my ghia. The GR-2s are stiffer than Boge fluid shocks, but not as ridiculously stiff as the KYB Gas-A-Justs. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

So where do you buy Boge shocks from? Are they expensive?
What about Monroe Monro-Matic Plus? Are they of good quality? The price for the Monroe's is cheap.

Are Sachs shocks the same brand as Boge? I noticed that Rockauto has Sachs rear shocks but not Sachs front shocks. Where is the best place to buy this brand? I would buy the rears from Rockauto.
Thanks,

They are now. The shocks I got early this year have both brand names on them.

I actually had them sourced through the local ACVW shop. I don't shop by price and I really don't remember what I paid for them.
"Boge" is stamped on the shock while the "Sachs" name is on a sticker. So I'm hoping these are still the Boge shocks just being sold through Sachs. They've been working well on my type-3 and don't squeak like the cofaps I took off.
