My MPG is terrible, it never used to be bad but now it is terrible. It must be something wrong.
Its been bad for a while now, i thought it was the Carb so i rebuilt it but its still bad.
I have a 1973 with a 1200 engine. Running a 31 Pict 4 carb.
What could be the issue? What could i check?
Sorry if i left some information out, lemme know if you need more. _________________ 1973 Bug

timing being off will effect the gas mileage. wouldn't hurt to check the valve gap before checking the timing and then readjust the carb.
what is the ethanol percentage over there now? |

Pull your engine oil dipstick, is it way too full?
If yes, fuel pump is shot.

the fuel that should just stay still is instead going to the engine through the fuel pump.... a leak. _________________ 1970 Käfer |

Did you check your fuel lines? You could have cracks in the rubber/fabric-covered hoses and not realize it.
What about your tank? Any pinholes? I had a small leak that I did not notice for a while but when I pulled the tank and I found the rust hole. Until then I thought my fuel gauge was broken. _________________ 1974 SB Vert - Getting there, slowly but surely |

I have checked all this, replaced all fuel lines and removed the tank. There is a rusted area on the tank but it is only very slight surface rust. No holes of other areas of concern. _________________ 1973 Bug

Well, in that case maybe your neighbor is messing with you removing gas at night?
or more realistically..........
It is time for a complete tune up check. Adjust the valves, do a proper electrical tuneup and make carb adjustments.
Also make sure your fuel system isn't "percolating" after shut down and fuel is seeping into the cylinders with a hot engine.
Keep in mind that some of these engines for whatever reasons don't get good fuel mileage and you may just have one of them.
but if you used to get good mileage, you should be able to again.
Dave |
The neighbour has been giving me dodgy looks.......
But yeah, i will be doing a complete tuneup next week, hopefully i can get back to the kind of MPG i was getting a few months back _________________ 1973 Bug
