Thanks Steve!
So my next question, for anyone that may know the answer...why was the engine replaced...I take it, this was done at the factory before the car was shipped correct? _________________ Transporter Restorations

Douglas,
The simpleanswer is: "beats the hell out of me". In some cases, it seems obvious---that is---the replacement is unusual in the sense that other completed cars do not show this. I other cases, it is within a group where several cars in a row had motor changes. The latter makes me think (we will never know) that part of the listing was pre-done (i.e. , expected for a group and then they changed their minds for a group of cars.
I am not completely certain that in the latter cases, that the first motor was really put in, then taken out and the new one in. I say that because, usually, if that were the case, the the later would be noted by date.
So---beats the hell out of me.

A friend of mine purchased a 1965 356 SC coupe off the showroom floor, but wanted a C motor. The dealer obliged, and the change was noted on the kardex. Another friend has a 1965 SC coupe that had a very early engine failure. The engine was exchanged, with #s noted on kardex. Another friend... well, you see where this is going. _________________ Jack Staggs

just to clarify...the info here is not from the kardexes. So, those later changes would not be noted on my source material. I am lisiting day of production, etc. info with some later changes dated before the car left production.

Thanks very much for sharing this info Steve. When you return, I would love to know more about 57874.
Interesting to note that it is 62 cars later than Marcus' (see earlier post), so curious about the build date as compared to his. |

Guys,
I am on the trip now so away from my stuff---but as to build dates and seeming unusual fact of 60 cars earlier or later......keep in mind that cars were not built in chassis number order. I have seen differences of over 200. That is a completed car might be 200 earlier in number than the next one finished. This happened for lots of reasons which Ican get into as we go along.

Steve,
I recently picked up 84015 58 Speedster. PO had the car since 1975. Car has a local history with a number of SoCal 356 guys, I am working on documenting that personal history with photos and stories from those that came into contact wth the car. Fun stuff.
Anything cardex and beyond is appreciated.
PS. 'Speedster Type 540' recently joined my collection as well.
Thanks!

Dan,
I'm on my trip and cannot help until after 7 June. I do not likely have the kardex information but can look up production data. There will be a backlog when I am back so please be patient.
I am glad you have the book.
Regards,

Hi Steve, Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.
Here is the info you provided.
104365 motor 82318 trans 26902 finished prod 14 July1958 no radio
I just checked my #'s to what you posted and everything almost matched. My trans # currently in my car is 20902, is it possible you miss read the info?
Also could you check Speedster # 84367? According to the Porsche spec book it is the first Speedster of 58' could this be verified?
Thanks,

I will re-look with respect to the trans number---sometimes the German is no so readable.
As to the 1958 question, while Iwill look also when I get back, this is really one of those imponderables---model years mean very little in terms of numbering.
Best,
Steve |
