First off, you should always start off with an AS41/21 dual relief case if you intend to build anything performance. Second, educate yourself on what to look and inspect a case yourself on when you go to look at one, that way you can make a cost assessment on needed machine work vs worth to buy the case. Third, Carcraft and Brothers are hard to beat on machinen work prices and will call you when required work unforseen is needed. Ive never seen any additional prices in any of my bills for hot tank charges. Shipping can add up $$, but so can doing it twice. I send all my stuff to them for work and dont look back on any build. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

Im more curious about brother co. Can anyone give me a site or contact info? Jfats, thanks for the advice i just want to find a good case that works well because case in good shape is number one priority if i want the engine to run smooth and longer lasting. I will be rebuilding more than 1 engine because i have bought few running motors, they ended up to be junk such as ovaled dowel holes or main bearings with deep scratches etc..... So i decided to rebuild some for myself so i will have a nice spare just in case if my other motor acts up. _________________ 74 Super Beetle SOLD

Best of luck on finding a good case. Post pics with questions later if you find one. _________________ 1973 VW Karmann Ghia - 1679cc, Kadrons, MoFoCo 041's, Tri-Mil Euro, Interstate Battery, and a little rust.

From my perspective vintage VW's are beyond being used for daily driver purposes. It would be best to have your car parked in a garage, and kept away from the elements on a daily basis. Zack

People have this idea that you just pass a boring bar through the case and that it is supposed to be cheap. Every time you stick a bar in there, the machinist is risking buying a replacement case as you can end up effing it up. Someone does them in my area for $35.00. But I see the work after the crank does not spin after bolting the case. Then it is always has been 125.00 if I do them.
The linebore job is the most important machine work you have to do to the case to make it useful. If it cannot be done perfect, don't bother as the mains will eat itself in no time. This job requires some serious precision and tools to do right.
Blueprinting for $45? I am thinking breaking out the gauges and measuring all holes for tolerances and checking flatness on surface plate, checking the main tilt of linebore, correcting the bore spigots based on the crank axis line, so on. That is some cheap labor if that be the case.
400.00 spent on a case -any case- is about the average if you gotta wash/clean, inspect and do all the necessary machining to get it to work.
So you need to pick a really nice case if you are going to spend the money. _________________ "A free people can only afford to make this mistake ONCE."

I would stay with ACE. Art ate the cost in labor when they were line boring a case for me an the bit decided to jam and break.
My case is fine it just had to go out another .020". And art even checks out the pressure control and relief galleys and buffs them up.
Before they line bore they torque up the case and thoroughly inspect for cracks.
They do pull the galley plugs on request but if they are still serviceable they leave them.(no sense in making a new problem) _________________ 1973 SB 1776cc

What about new cases? I thought about this for a while and figured if i find a case for $100 then $400 to get it cleaned up, machined etc... thats almost the same amount of money for a new case.... just a thought. _________________ 74 Super Beetle SOLD

If that case is as stated in the ad, it should be going for a lot more money.
The novice assembler isn't going to be equipped to check this case out when he gets it. And he probably won't be able to identify problems he experiences as being related to the case.
Do you feel lucky?
