Got some time off and have been tinkering on the bus and working on getting headliner installed. Today we just did some planning and trying to figure out how we are going to do this. We have never put a headliner in so ANY tips or special instructions would be greatly appreciated. From what I have heard it is better to start with glueing the vinyl around the windows, is that correct? Also we were thinking we would start at the back around the hatch because that would be the more difficult part and work our way towards the front of the bus with the headliner. We discovered that the bows that TMI gave us for the headliner are not even close to the original bows, luckily I still have 6 of the 9 original ones from the original headliner. So I guess we will chop and rebend a few of the ones TMI gave us.
(Original is on the right)
A few pics of how it looks now, back window is taped off so we don't get spray adhesive on it.
Thanks for the help! _________________ My '71 Bay Build:

I love the bus man! Great colors!
I think me and you are relatively close to the same age, so if you ever find yourself in Arizona you should drop me a line. I'd love to meet up and see the bus in person! |

Progress is being made! After spending quite a bit of time yesterday making templates and all that good stuff we were ready to stick our vinyl down. A big thanks goes to my grandma who has been helping me a lot with this headliner and vinyl. She is the one who got the vinyl stuck down because I couldn't make it to the shop today. I did get some more insulation sound deadening stuff for the roof so I can slap it on this weekend before the headliner goes on.
If you have any questions or comments, lemme hear em'! _________________ My '71 Bay Build:

Got some more poor mans dynamat installed! Got all of my walls and doors (except hatch) covered in sound deadening and it seemed to make a noticeable difference when we started it up. I also plan on covering the back engine box/rear fender wells which should make an even bigger difference. My grandma has also got some more vinyl stuck on around the windows.

Thanks! I have got the headliner fully installed but not much has been going on other than just driving the crap out of it. I also bought an electronic ignition kit I just have to get it installed. I have been pretty busy but tomorrow is my last day of school so things should settle down and I can post some pictures and give the bus a little more attention but it is running great!!
Possibly looking into freeway flyer/1776 set up. What are you guys's thoughts on that? I would like to do some traveling this summer in it so that would be really nice. I also am really looking for a good read bench seat so if any of you guys have any suggestions please let me know!!
Thanks!! Collin _________________ My '71 Bay Build:

I would go with a stroker if you are going to go with a freeway flyer. 1776 won't be quite up to a taller 4th. You'll find yourself downshifting a lot I'm afraid. Something in the 2110 area or maybe the size Aeromech always recommends (I forget what that is) might handle that better. Or just go 1776 and stock gears. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

So i have had the headliner finished up for a while but just havnt posted any pictures.
I am really happy at how all of this turned out except i am starting to get edges of the vinyl peeling up. The actual headliner part is holding up and staying great it is just the edges of the vinyl that are starting to peel away from the sheet metal. We used 3M Super77 for adhesive. Is it the adhesives fault, are we using the wrong adhesive? We redid the back corners because we found out we had them pulled too tight and they have stayed pretty good.
I also got plastic kick panels installed. I bought them from a company with an add in the classifieds but i forget who. The panels installed really easy and fit nice and snug. I also went around with a spray can and resprayed all of my ducts and vents under the dash.
before
after
We have been getting a lot of rain lately and i have noticed my driver and passenger door windows are leaking pretty good. The seal around the door is keeping water out it is just water getting in through the windows and water is getting down in the door. Is water supposed to be getting down in the door? I dont have door panels on so it is kind of getting inside the bus.
So this is what i have got so far, if you have any tips or suggestions please share! _________________ My '71 Bay Build:

Holt s*** bro! I just went through this whole build and I am in love.
I'm 17 and I bought a 69 two weeks ago. The level of work you put in is unreal!
Between my two jobs, school and two sports, it is hard to find time to get work in but hopefully I can get my old lady somewhat close to yours! _________________ Mitchell
