|
|
hello all. well, seeing i can't keep my hands idle for long, i stumbled upon a potential deal. i can pick up a 1776 from a friend who is moving.
it needs a head, it has some odd funky cracks around the upper stud mounting area (if i buy it, i'll post some photos). my thoughts are :
i want to put this in a 71 bus. i was going to also swap in a 091 as well. from the info i have found, a 78 2.0 bus has about 67hp/101ft.lbs of torque.
i figure if i decide to play with this, i will buy new heads. from who? unclear at this point. the real question is, can a pull off a torque "monster" (ha!) with a 1776?
me being me, i would pull the case apart, send off the rotating mass to be balanced, re bearing it and run it. but i know me, and i'll get a case of the may-as-wells's and since i'm here's so i would welcome and input on a cam/lifter combo
also, i need/want to run heater boxes. so, lets go shopping:
cam/lifters
heads
i have a pair of ICT's with tall manifolds
i have a 019 dist. all ready to go.
i was going to get a kymco ceramic header
i am looking for 'off the shelf' stuff. i don't need to get all crazy with this. it is more about being a fun "can i do it" project. as far as budget goes, you tell me. the goal is to push a bus faster than 65 and not be scream like a banshee if i need to push it to 75. i know, a lot of effort for 10 mph
dreaming? wasting my time? what say you? _________________

I wouldn't do that engine / 091 combo on a heavy Bus that has the aerodynamic profile of a brick.
A 1904cc engine would be my choice - if I never planned to drive in the mountains.

I hear you on that.

seeing that the 091 was standard issue in a bus, i figured if i could duplicate the torque of a 2.0 the transmission wouldn't know whats plugged into it. _________________

My thoughts were it would be easier build a 1904cc that will hit the 100 ft/lbs, plus range. Since its a Bus, you want some low end grunt, as well.
That 1776cc can easily become a 1904cc by upgrading to a crank with a 74mm stroke without clearancing issues - but check.
Check with Jose at DPR. His cranks will be counter-weighted and balanced. Get the flywheel done and mated for the crank at the same time. You will want to spend some money on ported L3 heads.
Just some suggestions. I'm sure there are more than a few 1776'ers on the road mated to an 091. In South Florida, I wouldn't mind it - but I like the option to do mountain passes in my Bus.

my bus had a 1776 with a 091 and yeah it's all fine on flat land but as soon as you hit a grade the cht will hit 400f in no time.
I still have to slow down on grades with my 2027cc and drive by cht. _________________ 70 Westy, 2027cc "dual DRLA 40 m130 i55 wjdoc a165 p33 v30 "w100 straight cut 040 polished heads 1.25 rockers 1.5 A1sidewinder supertrapp muffler trans 091 coil SUM-850500 CDI universal svda Pertronix

YMMV I see you may have two 091 kicking around all you need is a bell housing and mod the input shaft and try it out if you dont like it stick the 002 back in and sell the 091 to a buggy or a bug guy they love them bus trans.
If I had a 002 Id see witch I liked more. _________________ 70 Westy, 2027cc "dual DRLA 40 m130 i55 wjdoc a165 p33 v30 "w100 straight cut 040 polished heads 1.25 rockers 1.5 A1sidewinder supertrapp muffler trans 091 coil SUM-850500 CDI universal svda Pertronix
