There are a million topics on timing things but I couldn't find any thing timing advice with an AK engine code... any idea what I would time that combo to with the 009 dist? The marks on the pulley are a dent at TDC and a notch at 5atdc...

28-32* BTDC @ 3500rpm.

For all VW engines the best way to set the timing is at 3000 RPM set it at 28 to 30 BTDC. The timing at idle speed is not important.

if you want a good starting point your pulley mark is 5 atdc make a mark the distance from the mark to the notch 2 times to the right that will be 10 btdc. and then check it at 3000 rpm 28 to 30 degrees

Not necessary, just set it up at TDC, have someone crank the engine and you twist the distributor till the engine starts. Then use the timing light to set it @ 3500rpm.

Assuming you have a stock pulley and are using a light with an advance feature you need to be using the TDC mark and one of the others. If you do not have a light with an advance feature then you need to make a mark at 28° BTDC on the pulley. Time to use that high school geometry you thought was so worthless. Wink

Idle timing IS important from an emissions standpoint. That is the reason for vacuum retard and 5 degrees ATDC originally. Since '74 models are exempt in most states its not much of an issue today.

When I advanced my '67 from 7.5 to 10 BTDC the increased CO and especially HC was significant. We have a Dodge that is still subject to biennial testing. I have to retard it by four degrees to get it to pass HC.
