Thanks Everett!
That whole project is mind blowing VW archeology!!!!
Will there be more pictures? How about a "dissection"
with photodocumentation. Does that relic have a motor
still?

Check out the blog for some more pictures.
We will get back with more pictures, once we have decided to to with it.
Sadly the engine and gearbox was removed before they buried it some 50 years ago.

Anders..
Great Work!! That is a shame about the drivetrain,
but a great find. I loved the pictures on the blog. The
condition of the gearshift knob is incredible (considering
where it has been!) I do believe there are many usable
parts there......dig up another one and maybe you will
have enough to build a complete unit. _________________ 1962 Beetle

fantastic find! why not dig up an old VW in someone's front yard? especially if it is a wartime model. who really cares if there is anything 'useable' on it. it is out of a passion for these vehicles that we go to such lengths.
my cousin bought a house in ohio that had a 60's ghia slowly returning to the earth in her backyard. not much left of it, less than this kubel. i wish i had spent the time to remove it. i will see what is left this fall.
congratulations on the excavation....
i hope it will buff out. |

The digging went down on a friday afternoon and evening. During that time, at least 20-30 of the locals visited the scene. Among them where the daughter of the last owner. Now around 60 years i would guess. She told us many stories from back when they used the car as a daily driver.
The lime-green paint is the remains of some house-paint that they got. The car was brush-paintet, and they were happy with the result !
The reason that these items are i "such a good condition", is that it was buried in sand. They have litterally been dry all the time, as the sand drains the water quickly. From october to may the ground is frozen and during this period it has been all dry. The sidecar is in better condition than the Kubel because it was buried higher up and more away from an adjacent river.

Sorry, no motorcycle. Just a sidecar. It is produced by Bernardet in France during WWII for the motorcyclecompany Gnome & Rhone.
You find a picture of it on our blog.

Wow, you really think so? Any more?
In my profile all my posts can be reread. I donīt expect anyone is interested in doing so, but I just took a look at them.
At least there are not many negative ones.
Just sometimes when I see or read bullshit, I call it bullshit.
I do not think we have such sensible souls here around that they canīt stand that.
Here we have the guys who digged out that Kübel and they are exited and proud of it. So they got upset when one came up with a comment which sounded negative to them.
As I said, it wasnīt meant as negative as it may sounded.
In fact there are two places close to me where I plan to dig for a split and a split vert somewhen. And even when I just find junk, I guess it will be fun. |
I know Germans can be matter-of-fact people who say what they think, good or bad. I know I have to self edit all the time to keep from being negative, otherwise I might blurt out how much I can't stand slammed, narrowed-beam cars. Well, no hard feelings. At least I hope my share to this forum will be positive in the sum.

Thatīs very OK for me.
Just donīt let certain people hear that.

That alone makes it worthwhile. You didn't just dig up a car, you dug up some memories and interesting stories too.......... _________________ John Henry

Great job and effort recovering this piece of history! I cannot imagine how excited you were from the start. Wondering what it looks like after being buried after all the years, then seeing the first glimpse appear. |

Excellent find, I know I will enjoy this project. Interestingly enough, although we had German forces over here too during the war I haven't heard of that many (any?) wartime VWs found here. Having had import restrictions on foreign (non-Eastern bloc) cars after WW II you would think they would have been preserved and taken care of. There are a few Kubelwagens and some Schimmwagens here in Finland but to my knowledge they have been imported at a later stage. |
