Thanks all for the kind words...

Our attention is now turning to the carpet now that all the seats are repaired.
What is the correct colour carpet for our colour combination?

Iv found two colours listed but want the 100% correct one.

I have seen silver grey listed and honey brown. Im swayed towards the honey brown being correct but any pointers greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Dave

I think the silver grey is what's in my car, I know you can't get the original carpet anymore, I have to dig out some photos....whatever's in my car is the correct one for a late L331 Oval. Smile

Tom

Thanks Tom much appreciated. Iv borrowed this pic from suboval as he has the same leatherette interior as ours.
This looks brown which is causing me the confusion!

I think the grey would look better and if you do have a pic that would be great.

Well, Dave I have German Polka-Dotted cloth, but the carpet was the same on all L331 cars at that time period.

Suboval's L331 has to be like the BEST survivor out there, but I guess MY carpet might be the most perfect condition one, remember my car has that
Kamei parcel shelf/hatch covering up the entire rear carpet area.

I can take some real close up flash bulb pics of the carpet so you can see details, I think that it's a silver grey with some brown threads running through it......?

Someone was making this 1950's carpet in Germany (not Ingrid Oppermann)but they QUIT making it like 2 years ago.

Blauchen's across town, but next time I go over to check him I will try to remember to take some carpet pics for you. Smile

Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see this car restored, it will be one of the BEST restored, most correctly restored L331 "Euros" out there, then ready to take the concours awards!

Thanks Tom much appreciated, I have asked Wolfsburg west for some good pictures of there grey square weave but they don't seem keen to reply! Mailed them twice with no reply. There stuff seems really close but can't run the risk if it's wrong. Also Lenny copp has sent us some of the original blue leatherette to correctly do the B pillar and under the rear side window area. Just waiting on this then the headliner can go in.

Dave,

Why don't you ask Ingrid Oppermann) in Germany about carpet?

I have mailed them a couple of times with no reply hence why I tried wolfsburg west. It gets very frustrating when your trying to buy parts and nobody will take your money!

Might give her another try...

A little update.....

Well we had the car upholstered but sadly the guy who did it wrecked it!

So we had to start again.... Which was a tad upsetting. Our headliner carpet and sound proofing was all ruined as was the vinyl I sourced for the B pillars.

Here are some pics of the damage..

The first 4 pics are of the B pillar. He used no padding behind despite this being requested and the quality of finish is shocking. They don't even match side to side and the stiching is at full stretch.

Next up is the carpet fit. He made no effort to fit it correctly. Just cut it and glued it. I know this isn't visible but its not the finish we require.

This is the headliner fit above the rear window. there was actually a bit of material stuffed in this hole in an attempt to cover it. i just pulled it out to find the hole!

Creases above the passenger door. what you can't see is all the holes in it where a tool was used to jam it in the groove.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This bit really annoyed me. Rather than steam and stretch the carpets over the double curve on the inner arches he just cut them up the middle then glued them in and had the audacity to say the german square weave carpet was shit!

The rear luggage carpet isn't even straight and the front isn't great either. There was no sound deadening fitted anywhere in the car despite this being requested and picked out and payed for! So the car was sent to a new trimmer where it currently sits awaiting its new wool cloth headliner B pillar sections and carpet. We have much more faith in the new trimmer add he was gobsmacked at how bad the work was.

A very costly mistake!

Well we have the car back from the trimmers for the second time and we are now pleased with the result. Although they did do a fair few bits of paint damage its nothing we can't fix once the cars together.

Nice engine.

The fuel pump appears to be a later one - 57 would not have the filter on top.
The filter was added in 12/58.

Your condenser looks strange to me - maybe it is just crooked?

Looking great Dave!!!!

Send me your email Dave and I'll send you some detailed photos of a original never restored 57' Oval motor (with less than 20,000 miles on it).

That way you can compare for details etc., you got it very close! Smile

Wow, she is really coming along nicely at this point, Dave.

Keep up the fine work, and we all look forward to more photos as you (and the car) proceed with the final phase of this superbly detailed restoration.

Beautiful car and great job not accepting a half rate job from a shop. Not all shops rush a job like that but when they do they shouldn't get away with it! Really minor picky detail, but your wipers are facing the wrong direction. For a LHD car they park on the passenger side.

Check out this owners manual for reference. Again great job!

Well the wiper swap turned into a bit of a pain! had to pull the motor and change the internal cam to get them to sweep the correct way. Will also be installing the copper band brake as it is missing. Thanks to DL for the parts.

With that done and the linkage repainted as I marked it (doh!) our attention has turned to the doors!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The doors not latched in this pic hence why its popping out.

Since I took the pics earlier today I have tweaked the door a little so the body line is now perfect. It swings and latches with very little effort.

Ordered all the missing little bits from Wolfsburg west today as well. Things like the seals for the trim, bungs for the door screw holes clips for the window channel, check strap pins etc all consumables. still came to $157 though!......

Looking Hotttt Dave!!!!

This car will by no doubts be one of the BEST L 331 European Beetle restored to date recently, so glad that you are keeping it 100% original and I'm glad I could be of some help with the correct colors and things.

The outside color and then the interior leatherette are going to "PoP!" when that's all together, a very very photogenic color for an Oval.

Smile

Tom

P.S. I actually had BIG PROBLEMS trying to install my restored semaphores this weekend......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Power is all good, wires are all good, I just can't get the semaphore to sit into the body properly?

Really maybe just a stupid OVERSIGHT? BUT HOW DO YOU CORRECTLY INSTALL SEMAPHORES???

I haven't been able to find anything online about doing them and also I have'nt even touched a pair since 1995 when I had Manfred in Germany work on "Matilda's" semaphores way back when.......can anyone suggest how to get them in the slot installed without damaging the paint at the top of the semaphore?

(I think this advice will be helpful to Dave too...)

Cheers tom much appreciated.

With regards to the semaphores....

I hook up the wiring first. Then I pop the semaphore open and sort of hold it neither open or closed. I then feed the semaphore into the slot and let the back of it drop in while holding the arm up as close to the bodywork as possible but not touching, like its operating kind of thing. I then let it drop but not close with my finger between the lens and coil. this lets me locate the top hook in the slot of the pillar. then lift the arm up again and line the screw up. I always re-tap the hole for the screw as well to make sure it runs in nice and easy. adjust as needed and voila!

I will try and get some pics up this evening if I get a chance to make it a little more clear...

Thanks Dave!

You know I was soo stupid to forget putting masking tape over the painted arms, damn I saw that done once on some grooved semaphore car, so that the paint wasn't scratched before they were installed.....uggh!

Well, hopefully they will just drop in after I figure it all out, seems all the wires are connected properly and even lite up the speedometer arrow indicators *for the FIRST time since I own the car!*

I've decided to leave the car as it was wired up by MAHAG to accept the Bullet and Rear Taillight Blinkers together with the Semaphores, that way I'll see if all those extra relays are there BECAUSE of that reason, I do believe....?

I'll post pix over at my thread if I make any advancements. Smile

Thanks again Dave,

Tom
