Well today was door rebuild day, day1! decided to fit up the drivers door. All I can say is having the patience of a saint is a bonus and regular breaks a must!
Still 5 hours of work and I think it looks pretty good. We spent a good while fettling things to make sure of a good fit. If anybody spots anything Iv done wrong please say, it all helps.....

Been busy with a few bits and bobs....

Fitted out sound deadening to all the interior panels. Used a black tar type board which was self adhesive. It was good stuff and a lot more overkill than OG but you will never see it behind the panels and we really didn't want it sounding tinny or rattly.

cleaned and refitted the OG door cards in the rear. the fronts are being re-done as they were full of holes.

The Passenger side card had an odd mark which you can see in this pic but I have since used some boot polish furniture polish and an assortment of cleaners to get rid of it!

Also refitted the bonnet and quite chuffed with the fit..

Its now got to have a few touch ups and a full colour sand and polish then we will fit the rest of the interior and all the trim and chrome! should be finished in the next two weeks...... Cool

Popped all the seats in, Its all the original material. had some stitching done and a repair to the back of the passenger seat. The front door cards are currently being repaired as somebody had put a lot of screw holes in but this will be sorted and they will be good as new. Other than that its all as VW intended!

Been a while since I updated but its moved a long way backwards! car has been sent out to be repainted as the small little marks/ blemishes we found started mounting up. Thought best to redo the top coats. so its been taken apart again ready to go.

Also found the correct air cleaner stamped 7/57 which was nice to find. along with a NOS choke cable which we fitted as it looks better than the other. Also the jack is now fully restored and we are making the trunk liner and wire cover from some millboard we acquired. Pics soon Very Happy

NOS Choke cable.....

Little video of the motor running and testing a few of the electrics. Needs a bit of a tune but not bad on the whole.

Since then it now has the correct aircleaner and its a few hours away from finished!

You may have fixed it, but I'd adjust the divider bar (guide) between the vent window and door glass. It may be nit picking, but the gap should be even between the bar and vent glass.

Great looking car! Assembling the doors was my last task as well

Dave I think when that car is done, it will be the sexiest Oval in all of England!!!!

You did an amazing job on the car, one of the best current restorations I've seen of a 1957 car.

Keep the photos coming. Smile

Tom

Cheers all for the comments. Always seems to be the last little bits that take the longest!
Its been a pain at times but I'm glad that everything other than chroming, line bore on the case, headliner(twice) and the re-paint/ repairs was done by us at home. Iv had a spanner or socket on every nut bolt and screw on that car and I hope that it shows that If I can do it any body can! Shocked Shocked

Mad thing is I'm tinkering on the 68 to use as a daily while looking for another. I must be mad......... Very Happy

Yes!

Have to say this in all authority and knowledge of the matter, that this car has to be one of the BEST modern correct/concours style restoration of the 1957 Beetle I've seen in years.

Great attention to details, Dave you have brought a Austrian Export Oval back to life, that L 331 Horizon Blue is beaming, the seats so nice dark Blue and piping.

I can see that you and your Father really "bonded" on this project and I know that it wasn't easy, I bet you cursed under your breath a few times, the outcome is really amazing, wish you were closer than we could take both cars out for a cruise together.

Maybe I'll see you at the next Hessich O. ok?

Gute Fahrt and God Bless a Happy Drive!

Tom
