No doubt this post will p*ss off a few purists. I noticed several articles where builders of 3 Wheelers; fast and aerodynamic cars, were using Honda Gold Wing engines for motive power. The plywood / composite foam and 'glass bodies probably weigh in close to 1400-1500 lbs (a guess). Typically these mid-engine cars use Honda GL engines & shaft drive units while the front wheels handle the steering chores.
If a GL1200 engine can propel a 1500 lb. vehicle at hwy legal speeds why couldn't it do the same service for a Type 1?
Has anyone successfully installed the excellent DOHC Honda 1200cc engine in a VW Bug? Other than providing sufficient clutch surface area what other issues would remain? Think of it; 97 silky-smooth horses shoving der beetle down the road with confidence and proven reliability.
Note the three wheeled bug pictured is using a high output motorcycle engine for power (an economical alternative to building a $4000 Type 1 motor). Bet that car flies!
Even more radical would be installing the short Honda GL engine on the bug transaxle, hidden from view so both rear tires rotate as in oem mode.
What a sleeper that configuration would make....
IF this guy can do it ... anyone can.
Not least is the TriHawk Magnum - does 100+ mph and handles like a scalded dog at 11gs.
VW had a great idea ... these 3 wheeler guys are kicking it up a notch

I already dont care for the suburu mods to a vw. With unlimited funds , the sky is the limit.

Its still not as cool as a vw engine imo. To each his own. -Jon _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

thank you for posting in such a large font; I don't have to highlight your errors, such as this one...
I think that should be more like 1.1 g's.... since 11 g's is closer to fighter-jet territory... _________________ póg mo thóin

You've obviously never driven a Trihawk Magnum. |

No, at those g's you shoot into the future and you'll wake up on a park bench. Happens all the time. _________________

And 11g's on a road course is sooo practical and realistic. Who freakin' cares! If you're gonna do it, don't make it look like crap. Put the motor in there, and keep it on four wheels. You might even want to put it in the stock location and make it look like an actual car! _________________ '67 Sunroof

These ideas are nothing new -
The Tri-Hawk had a Citroen motor; idea never took off & it died a horrid death in the early '80's...
Just because an idea is 'different' doesn't necessarily make it a great idea -
Ahh, youth... and ignorance -

Dog
Don't listen to those guys, just do your own thing. I bet you get a R200 center section from a Datsun/Nissan 280z-300z car and mount it in the rear between the frame horns and mount the motor in the back seat area and use a short drive shaft to hook it up to the rear end. the only problem is the Goldwing transmission is not super strong, I blew one up on my brother Wing doing burnouts once. if you want to see a bad ass car powered by motorcycle power check out YouTube for a Smart car powered by a Hayabusa motor.

It was a 81 gold wing, I guess I should have said early models. I know it was not the only one because a friend of ours had the same problem. but they both had HD Barnett clutch's in them.

Fat finger strikes
Oh how horrible a fat font with an error...
the shame of it all .....
Ah yes Grasshopper ... in Forumspeak; you must remember no good deed goes unpunished.
one reviewer says the Trihawk does 1.1 gs
The other says: This Trihawk is fun and every one that sees it is in disbelief. They ask what is it, a kit car. No I say, this is a production motorcycle from the US. It is stabler then any vehicle, including bikes, that I have ever driven. You can take corners at any speed it can go up to .91gs. Its acceleration is 0-60 MPH in 9.24 Sec. It has a Citroen GSA 1300cc flat 4 air-cooled 4 stroke engine.

Now we have that out of the way back to the thread ........
Here's the three wheeler concept taken a radical step further.
The Carver is built by a Netherlands firm - looks like a real winner on three wheels. The company says one "flies" their vehicle.

If you are going to do this, go all the way. Use the Yamaha V6 Vmax SHO for boats. 250hp and 4.2 liters. The 250hp is at 6000 RPM. |

The boat motors do not like not having a nice cool supply of water to draw from. The cooling systems are way under size to run with a radiator of reasonable size........
The 4 cylinder 1000CC motors from the PWC's are the exception to this as they are the same units as the snowmobiles use and a near carbon copy top end wise of an R1. |
