I have a 1969 bus that I picked up about 9 years ago. It has been running great up until yesterday. I put a new carburetor and fuel pump on about 2 years ago. I was in Iraq for a year and my friend was starting it up for me. It has been running great for the past 3 months. Yesterday I was driving it and it started to sputter. I had to keep giving it gas to stay running but it was pretty rough. It seemed like the engine was a bit hot when I opened the compartment. I let it sit for a few minutes and it started back up. It was idling fine but after i drove it for a few minutes it started sputtering again. I noticed a small amount of oil leaking out. It would idle fine but would not stay running if I drove it. I put a new fuel filter on and changed the fuel lines. I cleaned the carb. Now it will start and only stay running if i keep my foot on the gas. I checked the points and re gapped them just in case. Its was also backfiring when i was able to drive it. I have no idea what to try next. Im trying to avoid taking it to a shop. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Welcome!
Dual or single port?, sounds a little like a vacuum leak but also confirm the solenoid on the left side of the carb above the throttle shaft clicks when the key is turned on, also might be worth investigating timing and dwell. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Well, I have a 69, and before I went to DP, my SP had a very similar problem. Mine happened right after I adjusted valves, and logical conclusion was I messed it up (valve adjustment). I didn't!
Long story short, it turned out to be a condensor, that just decided to fail at that time. For less than $5 bucks, it's worth giving it a shot!!
You can also look at the points and see if they're pitted or burnt, though not fool-proof.
It does sound like fuel issues, but it could be anything at this early stage. _________________ If it weren't for "last minutes;" -- nothing would ever get done! |
