|
|
Finally got a beetle. Paid $1500 for it and parked it to plan my baja build.
Have been lurking the site and found alot of great info. It's rust free body with some small holes in the pan and a one piece front. I want to cut the front better, install a full cage and front tubes for the front clip to attach to and front tube stinger. Probably replace pans(still not sure) and any other suggestions. I took all the wiring out as it was hacked to pieces.

looks like a good start. rewire it, get it running and stopping and have some fun. make a list of things you would like to do and plan downtime periods between having fun so you don't have a on going, non running project. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy
sand it, fill it, paint it, throw some mud on it and then baja it. |

You say you want to cut the front of the body cleaner.
I suggest that until you get the full roll cage installed and braces from the cage A pillars to the door hinge mounts, that you leave as much of the front 1/4 panels as you can. At least cut no farther back than the fender bolt hole just ahead of the gas filler. You want some metal in there to support your doors so they don't sag. And you'll still need something to support the gas filler neck. _________________ Richard

you can get spools and 30 foot sections of wire in different gauges and colors from Home Depot that is used for trailer lighting. Dale M (on here) has lots and lots of beautiful wiring diagrams that i have used to wire street, off road and trikes. Harbor Freight sells wire connectors, heat shrink and wire (not as good as Home Depot) to help you along. get you a good marine grade fuse box and get busy. stock VW wiring is confusing. by making it simple and doing it yourself then you will know how to fix electrical problems when they come up.
here is a example of one of his diagrams:

How do I find the other diagrams. I tried to search for them? _________________ 72 Beetle Baja |

That is a cool oil cooler housing, but you are going to run hotter oil temp. with a non-doghouse oil cooler. The doghouse cooler is a flat plate design that is much more efficient that the tube type coolers. The aftermarket flat plate (Mesa type) coolers that are not on the fan shroud will not have air flow at slow speeds. It would be good for an extra cooler housing if you keep the stock cooler. _________________ OK Thang |

I was going to check and see if I have the stock one in it also? It has a cooler mounted on the back when I bought it? _________________ 72 Beetle Baja |

I have a good front harness I just pulled out of a 72 front clip. Still hooked up to the fuse block. If you Want it and will pay the shipping you can have it. Should go in a 10$ flat rate box. I think the headlight plugs are cut off but other than that it should all be there.
The front is what's up front around the dash. I also have the steering Collum leads _________________ My 72 Baja http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=492102

I looked at your photo and you have an external cooler. I cannot see if you have the stock shroud, but if you do then you will have the doghouse. Are there two outlets, about 2" dia. on the side of the fan shroud. These would be going to the heater boxes. The doghouse cooler is located in a small housing on the backside of the shroud. A doghouse, though smaller than your cooler, has more cooling surface area due to its flat plate design. Plus, the cooling fan pushes air over the cooler even when the bug is not moving. _________________ OK Thang |
