Envemo, aka "the Corvette of Porsches", still at the body shop. Was a "bag of door knobs", now should be much better.

Nice "A" Roy. I also love the color, great Pics. Was looking at a '58? 356A when I got this ENVEMO. The ENVEMO cost more, at the time. The 356 would have been a rusted hulk by now I suspect, or I would be waist deep in a $30,000 restoration 'bout now. Can't wait to drive the ENVEMO during a nice Chicago blizzard.

Yes Randy, how true you are. You can drive your car anytime without feeling why am I out in this rain. We have had nearly 6 weeks of wind and rain over here, its non stop but we haven't yet had the heavy snow some of you guys have had over the pond.

Normally I find a few days in the week to take my car out, its always been a driver, but I have to say its been sitting more than usual in the garage since Christmas. I like your car and your effort a lot by the way.

I live about one minute or so from the beach ( or whats left of it ) so many area's along our coast line are really suffering form high tides and 70 -80mph winds that is driving the waves over the defences.

I was recently faced with the same dilemma, I had the budget to restore my 56 Ghia, purchase an early 911 or 356 B/C but in the end I followed where my heart is and purchased an Intermeccanica Speedster replica. I've given up in this lifetime to believe I'll ever afford one at the rate they're going for these days. Life's too short, I'm buying this car for my own happiness and satisfaction and I couldn't care less what other people or those elitist Porsche owners think. I had a 356B in the late 80's and sold it for a Ghia. It was for the same reason; the later 356 design never really captured my heart. Wink

1956 Ghia,

I couldn't agree with you more! I too will never be able to afford a Speedster in my life time at todays prices! I also used to own a 356, it was back in the 70s. A '57 Speedster, which, regretfully, I sold in the late 70's.
I just can't wrap my mind around buying a replica after having owned the real thing, so I purchased a '73 Ghia convertible a few years back and put a 912 in it. I like it, but it's still not a Speedster....
I may still purchase a replica and hope you enjoy yours!

Black Betty--what a beautiful car you have! You did a super job on it.

Speaking of Ghias several pages back, my Ghia cabriolet is a 74 and I bought her new on Sept 26 in 1974--she will turn 40 this year and has 102K miles. I drive her regularly--she was my second car from 74-85, then she was retired and I drive her about 1-2K miles/year now. I love that car.

Randy, what do you figure the total weight to be when finished? On another note, the lower horn grille openings look pretty big. I don't know what kind of look you are going for, (outlaw, stock...?) but it might be kinda cool to make covers for them ala long hood 911/912 style. What are your thoughts for interior finish, exterior color, wheels, bumpers, and drivetrain? Maybe square off the bumper bracket holes a bit. I know,$$$

Total weight is unknown? I think there is a published weight from the Envemo factory, but I forgot what it was. I predict it will weigh around 1800lbs. Seems like it should be less, but that body is heavy! The only vehicles I have ever personally weighed, on a real scale were my gutted '66 Bug w/a 1600DP, at 1650lbs w/Bumpers. And my Chevy work truck ( a lot more!). The horn grilles are the correct, Porsche factory size, but they do look large in the photo. Could be the wide lens, and just that they are normally buried under the bumpers. Envemo put Bosch Fog lights in there. Covers with options for the fog lights and/or more brake cooling sounds good. I don't know what look I'm going for either, probably stockish. I'm just amazed that it's come this far. The car has been disassembled for over 20 years. Been screwed over by two asshole body men, you know who you are you bastards. And then came marriage, family, grad school (for her), college, you know the drill. Interior will be competition style, but with concession for some sound deadening. No A/C. The original signal Red color, but we almost went with white. Wheels will be stock Envemo painted silver/grey, until I can figure out what fits under there and what brakes I need. I'll try to put the stock bumpers back on, but they will be removed for any track work. I like the look of the 356C's with their bumpers, either way it's only eight bolts. Due to the short wheel base, and zero crash protection, no turbo for this ride. I have a NOS Berg/Okarsa 2110 engine from the '80's. It dynoed at around 175HP with no compression. With modern tuning and maybe more compression or 94's, I should eventually have about 180. Not much by todays standards, but with the Berg 5-Speed, it should be good for mid-12 sec quarter miles.

My Beck speedster in the beginning of this this thread weighs 1680 lbs. (weighed) and a original speedster is 1700-1720 lbs. (taken from vintage magazine road tests),so 20-40 lbs. withing the original! That Envemo is too cool for school!! Shocked Very Happy

Randy,

The 356A coupe had an empty weight of 850kg or 1874 lbs. Very similar to yours. Interesting thread.

And now...back to the ENVEMO. The body work is almost complete. Click for LARGER image. Check out how the door frames are identical to the original.
