I was thinking, I have a 1958 beetle here in Iceland, we do not have many beetle here, I also have a rear window section from a oval beetle, Ovals are my most favorite beetles, and i want to convert my 58 to an oval window, what do you think about that, is it wrong?

I agree, the only time I disagree is if it is a matching number car. Those are so rare it's ashame to violate it but it is your car. Do and enjoy. That's the ultimate goal.

I welded an oval into the rear of my 62 ragtop, added a W decklid and snowflakes. If my car was perfect to begin with, I wouldn't have done it, but it needed everything, and I couldn't afford a real oval rag. Now I have one, sort of. Whatever makes you happy, without cutting a nice original example is how I see it.

You do know that the front window of the ovals are not the same as the one of your car? It's going to be a mongrel. Or bastard if you wish. And you will need the proper W decklid, not cheap. Enjoy your car as it is. Cutting up VWs is a thing of the past.

X3
Your car if its what you want.... cut it... BUT if you ever plan a resale it will drop its value, unless you find that right buyer.

This person is asking for an opinion. Why equivocate with "It's yours, do whatever you want."? It's not like they've already made up their mind and asking the best way to do it.

Yes, it is wrong. The same way it's wrong to put in one piece windows in your doors, the same way it's wrong to put in a moon roof, or chop a giant hole on your dash for a CB radio, or weld sheet metal into your quarter windows so that you'll have a panel wagon Bug, or chop off your perfectly good front and rear aprons to make a Baja Bug, and the same way it's wrong to put a cheap plastic fuel filter between your fuel pump and carburetor.

x2. Doing irreversible modifications to 50 year old cars is not compatible with being a volkswagen nut, in my view.

The car in question, I think. Now that I see it, that car is nice. Much too nice and complete to cut into.

I love it when people judge whats right and wrong about cars they dont even own....

One things for certain, opinions have changed.. from the past. Kustomizing was the "thing" to do...for just about any car...

But now Old VW's are getting more scarce especially those that are solid and never molested.

Now..... Would I add an Oval window to this 1958..... nope.....no way... but I dont own it so its not my choice...

Id go with the "W' decklid for sure, as its a classy looking decklid.
In my opinion all the 1958-1964 windows are the perfect size. Splits and Ovals "look" GREAT...the best... but the limited sight distance and smaller glass openings are restrictive.

There is nothing that cant be "reversed" from modifications if someone wants to bad enough. If its not something really special, its just not cost efffective and practical to reverse heavy mods.

They make fiberglass split kits that go into the existing opening. Do they make an oval one? Or you could modify the split one. At least then someone could undo the madness.

Since your asking for an opinion and, if the car in the photos is yours.

Then I would say no it's not "wrong"...it is just morally unsound and something I would not do if it were mine.

With that being said, do what you want...your going to anyways.

Your car is too beautiful to cut up even when it has most of.the OG parts on it. If oval is what you want then why not sell it and get a real oval? I bet people will buy that 58 right away since it is very clean looking.

I had a 60 Euro that has a 56 rear window clip installed and a w-decklid. It was a rust free Arizona car too. It is your car, do what you want to it. Haters will hate either way. Like someone mentioned earlier measure 2 and 3 times and only cut once!
