I always put a little Permatex sealer around the outside lip just for a little extra protection. |

Last summer I bought this mini lathe from harbor freight.
http://www.harborfreight.com/7-inch-x-10-inch-precision-mini-lathe-93212.html
It is extremely basic then again I only paid 375 (used a 25% off coupon). Today I used it to make a .25" thick disk to drive the seals. It took me an embarrassingly long time to get it but takes about 30 seconds to do the job; that is, if you put the seal right!!!
Here are some pics.

Nice work on the seal disk. My tool box is full of home made "SPECIALTY" tools...now I know who to call when I need one of those... |

Do the dimensions work? Diameter has to be somewhere around 62 mm (if I remember correctly) because the seal is slightly recessed. |

Some more work is done. It is slow going as I just want to make damn sure that no nut or bolt comes off while I am driving .
I am also using permatex blue with fasteners.
Had little bit of trouble with the rear right caliper mount. It was rubbing against the disk. A little hand grinding took care of it.
Nice to see all the shiny parts going in.
For comparison, this is where I started.

One quick question. Can someone tell me what bolt size is used for rear trans mount to the cross member?
I see that I could possibly pick something which fits the holes with the right steel grade but since this is going to carry lot of weight, I just want to get what vw used for this. |

Are you referring to the two large bolts that hold the rear of the transaxle to the frame horns? _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Chassis looks great. Interesting to see the differences and similarities between your more modern IRS and my swingaxle. |

Thanks truckdude. Looks like you are way ahead of me. I still need to prep the body which will be quite a job. |

I have yet another question. Here are pictures of the parts of the steering column I got with the chassis. An adapter with 9 holes came with it (pictured) and also a matching formuling brand steering wheel came with it.
I am not planning on using the stock turn signals. Can I skip the part marked with the red arrow (assuming I can still use some other parts!!!)
In the last picture, arrow shows a place where the steering rod is damaged. Does the damage make it dangerous to use? |

Looks like someone 'fixed' this column by welding in a piece of tubing inside of the crash crumple area. Looks like a reasonably welded fix from what I can see, check it thoroughly. It certainly won't crumple in a crash anymore, I take a very small comfort knowing I have a crumple column. Not sure the carpet bushings inspire a lot of confidence. If you are not using the turn signal with the column you will need a bearing surface to replace it. You might be better off finding a replacement column that hits your mark better than this one. _________________ Gary
