So, a month before my wedding, my '68 bug decided to gimme some trouble. I don't know if it is getting jealous that I might be spending more time with the new wife or what's going on.

So... driving just fine today and she decided not to shift. I have been hearing the bearing squeal a bit when I have the clutch down and had trouble putting her into reverse the past few weeks. I pulled over, checked the clutch cable and it seemed to be adjusted. I forced her home. She won't go into first unless the car is completely off and stopped, but when she gets going I can shift her when the engine revs up enough to click into the next gear. When I got home, the car was smoking, I opened the back hatch and it wasn't the engine. I looked under and saw the tran boot leaking quite a bit. I had a roommate jump in and put the clutch down as I looked at the line and as he put his foot to the floor, the line moved some, but not like I think its supposed to.

This is my first bug, so I need some tips on what to check first, so I don't do something that is unnecessary. If I have to take out the engine, tips please!

I almost caved in and took it to a bug mechanic thats local, but I got a wedding coming up and I can't break my pocket book! Thanks!

Your clutch cable could be stretching or fraying.
Replacing them is kinda a pain but no too hard to do.

Agree. Sounds like a broken or breaking clutch cable.

your lucky most 68s are dead. so a moving one is like , magic Twisted Evil
what boot. there are many.
the axle boot leaks it's bad and the tranny will go dry and burn up.
not only that the boot that leaks can starve the outer bearing from lube.
so double bad. USE only VW boots , not clones. bughaus.com

clutch is bad, sound like a bad throw out bearing

get a new cable and install it.
set free play to 1/2 inch at pedal
there cheap.

same source.

smoking,
this part i can not under stand,
you never said WHAT was smoking.
my guess, is trans lube flying back and hitting exhaust.

your car needs serious service. and old cars, 10x that. sorry, its fact.

The input seal on the trans may also be leaking. The trans fluid can get on the firbre disk and make it swell. This causes the clutch to not release fully and make it tricky to get into and shift gears. Then under a load, the clutch will slip and you get a burnt smell.

Your symptoms matched mine almost to a T. Firsted noticed it trying to get reverse. However, for the sake of ease, check your clutch cable first before pulling the motor.
