The ICV also vibrates when the van is on but not running. I dont want to put any more time and money into this obsolete paperweight called a wbx. |
It is normal for the ICV to run when the key is in the on position, it always does.
FWIW I bought the parts for a 2.0 inline conversion(I was going to go Audi 3A because it's what I had) even before I got my van. I had the adapter plate, diesel carrier bars, oil pan etc. I bought my 1990 in poor running condition with leaking head seals and got the WBX running right, resealed the heads, and I have now stuck with it for 4 years and it's been extremely reliable. I like the peace of mind of knowing when it goes, I have the conversion on hand, but it just keeps going. I bought it at 139k and it now has 177k miles.

Well, first congratulations on your new money pit
As someone else has mentioned, the one thing that you need to do before taking this van anywhere is change your fuel lines. All of them. I'm too lazy to give you links to the several thread showing burnt vans but seriously, it's not an option.
Now, on a more positive note, you can stop worrying about changing the timing belt, there's no such thing in those vans, not even a timing chain ! Ain't that good news ?
Oh, and post pictures ! _________________ 89 manual Vanagon GL Wesfalia |

Still working on the idle issue. In the meantime I am getting ready for new fuel line. There is a BMW dealer close to me and I am going to see what they will charge for FI fuel line. Im reading that I need the 8x13 FI fuel line. Is that the stuff with BMW part #13 31 1 469 781? |

I purchased and received the diesel parts I needed for my ABA swap. Still have to unbox everything but I should have diesel bell housing, carrier bars, motor mounts, starter, fly wheel, oil pan, oil pickup, and oil filler. Not sure if the transmission input shaft is in there or not. If not, Im going to have to mod mine I guess.
Now I need to get some $ together for an OBD 1 ABA. |

A little update. I picked up an OBD2 ABA motor with low mileage for $40. It is missing a few things but overall looks clean. I will be installing it soon...hopefully. Just need a few misc parts and ECU.
Anyone know what clutch kit I use for the I4 swap? Cant remember if it is the vanagon diesel or gas clutch. I did a search but cant find a definite answer.
Also, can I use the transmission tins/dust covers from the ABA or do they need to be diesel vanagon parts? |

So....no one has an answer as to what clutch kit to get? I guess I will order the diesel one since I am using the diesel bell housing.
If my reading is correct I gotta trim 10mm off the stock gasser input shaft.
I hope I can run the ABA transmission tins cause I dont have the diesel ones. |

A cruise through van-cafe or busdepot website should confirm but IIRC, the diesel and WBX clutch are different diameters. Don't know if the WBX and diesel flywheel are the same diameter.
I used a KEP flywheel and WBX clutch on my ABA.
Don't forget to chamfer the end of the input shaft.

Well, I have yet to start on this van and I'm getting antsy. I want it so I can haul interiors and vendor at shows this year. Since the purchase of the van, I have bought a building for my business. No more lease for me, it is now a mortgage. Grown up problems....lol
Figured that I will post some pics of the day I got it and towed it home.
Where we found it. I spotted it in the field behind the trees and cars in some tall grass.
The tall grass is where it was sitting in the field. Grass was about waist high.
This is how it was when we pulled up.
Checking it over.

So we loaded it up and headed off to with it.
Parked it outside the old shop.
You can see the dent in the hatch and bumper on this pic
Some interior pics
That rear fold down was made by the P.O. He cut the seat bracket.
The motor and mileage

I already purchased 99% of the parts needed for the ABA swap from someone on here selling the diesel stuff. Just need to purchase a diesel clutch kit and source a good running MK3 2.0 for a donor and sell the shell to help fund the rest of the build. Not sure if I want obd1 or obd2.
I also have a set of free Recaros that a customer left at my shop for 2 years. They are rough and need to be redone. I called the customer and claimed the seats as payment for 2 years of storage fees. _________________ KDI CUSTOMS AUTOMOTIVE UPHOLSTERY

I checked out your website; no wonder you weren't scared off by the interior of your van!
Looks like you do nice work! It will be interesting to see how the interior of your van turns out when you are all done. |

The interior actually cleaned up extremely well. I have some pics I have to load onto the laptop.
Im removing the armrests off the original seats and installing them onto the Recaros I have. The interior may be re-wrapped in a sage green and dark grey but Im not sure yet. I will be installing a nice sound system with the amp mounted flush in the wall behind the drivers seat and 3 10s under the rear seat in a custom box.
I have also conversed with AVO and am trying to be a dealer for them here in the states. Will most likely be running 70mm drop kit from them unless I decide to use the airride I have sitting around my garage (off my 92 accord wagon).
Paint is all picked out and I will be re-spraying it in Lexus Bamboo Pearl Metallic at some point. Just to give you an idea of my skills, I did all the body work and mods on my 87 cabby and painted it in a carport homemade paint booth. 3 coats base, 3 coats clear. Did a 2000 grit cut and buff on it. Pics are below.

I am now on a mission to find an OBD1 93-95 VW for sale for $500 scrap value. Doesn't have to be in good shape as long as it runs good. Found a few on CL but I am always a day late....lol.
Still debating if I should look at the OBD2 96-98 VWs. I'm also contemplating trading my 91 Toyota PU for one plus cash. Decisions, decisions.
If anyone has had OBD1 vs OBD2 in their van, please chime in and give me your opinions. _________________ KDI CUSTOMS AUTOMOTIVE UPHOLSTERY

Havent had much money to play with lately. Today I purchased a few small things to progress forward on my Vanagon. Bought a shifter base rebuild kit from van-cafe.
Also bought some new shoes!!
Tomorrow I am looking at a low mileage OBD1 ABA. I will still need an ECU and Harness (car side). If it is good, I will be contacting busdepot about a diesel clutch kit. _________________ KDI CUSTOMS AUTOMOTIVE UPHOLSTERY
