Any more new info on this thing Jerry? Are you gonna end up taking it apart?

No updates yet, Ryan. I've been tied up with real work lately (ugh!) A friend came by today, and identified the 356 on the Peppertree logo as a 1965-6 so we know that the sticker is at least that new. I haven't gotten a response yet from the "Big Deal" Gallery website about the artwork. |

I had a few minutes this afternoon, so did a quick check of valve timing. I just used the 8 deg mark on the pulley for reference, and a ghetto dial indicator setup, so the accuracy is questionable, but it looks like intake opening is around 30 deg btdc at .040" lift, and total lift is something over .320" I need to pull the exhaust to mount a degree wheel, and do a more accurate check, but i wouldn't be surprised to find the crankcase modified to fit a 356 super camshaft. I'll be pulling the tin and exhaust for freshening, and will post pics soon. |

Hey Jerry, just checking in...
Have you had any free time to get this motor torn down? Found anything else interesting?

No progress yet. My summer got hijacked by family and business obligations. Hopefully things will settle down soon, and I'll have a little shop time.

I finally got around to digging deeper into the "Rivets" engine. I'm hoping to freshen it up and run it on the Salt this year. It has seriously leaked oil, and needs to be cleaned up before I open it up. Planning to pull the heads and cylinders, and hopefully not split the case. Here are a couple of pictures.
Flywheel was 6v 36hp VW modified for 200mm clutch and 12v ring gear.
Heads show signs of mild porting.
Lovely aluminum cylinders. I'd like to know what exactly these are, and how I should treat them.
The crank does not have an index mark stamped in the gland nut hole, as the Porsche cranks I've seen do have. The flywheel was fitted with a single thick shim, Porsche style. But, perhaps my screwdrive down the spark plug hole method of checking the stroke was faulty. Should know for sure in a couple of days.
The main oil leak seems to be the typical generator gasket problem. Big mess, but easy fix. Yahoo! |

The autopsy continues. After a couple of hours of grease sculpture, I pulled a head and cylinder to check dimensions. Bore is 82mm and stroke 74mm. If arithmetic is correct that makes 1563cc--woohoo! The cylinders are aluminum with iron liners. I don't know their original application, only that the holes for the studs were repositioned slightly, and the piston crowns appear to have been machined flat. Barrel shims are 1.45mm and deck clearance is 1mm. Heads have been opened up with a 1.5mm step. I haven't cc'd the chambers yet.
Other discoveries include Porsche "windage" pushrod tubes. Oil seal on crank pulley (leaking badly). Crank pulley ID'd as Porsche industrial ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=570758 ) and badass looking cam lobes. Visually the cam appears to have much more duration than stock or even "performance" grinds I have at hand. More research needed.
Current agenda includes fixing oil leaks, further inspection and servicing of valve system, checking and possibly adjusting compression ratio, and measuring cam profile.
To me this engine looks like a likely 36SSS contender. I'm torn between running it in original trim, or modifying exhaust and intake to run in SSS category. I would welcome any information and suggestions.
Machined piston tops, and cylinder stud holes moved inward.
.060" step cut heads with 33mm intakes
knurled piston skirts
Crank pulley seal modification

that's the plan, Britt. Hope to have it spiffed up and in the car for a little test drive in about 3 weeks. |

Knurling used to be standard procedure when reusing pistons, to restore skirt clearance lost due to slight collapse or wear of piston. It was also thought to improve cylinder lubrication by trapping oil in the grooves of the knurl. I assume these were Mr. Smith's motives when he built the engine. |

Super cool engine Jerry. Definatley a contender engine. Sadly the guys that did this neat shit have passed on. wouldn't it be nice to hear 1st hand what was done and why, instead of performing autopsies. _________________ 2010 Bonneville record holder Type 2, 36hp

I tried to contact Peppertree Automotive, but the number in no longer in service. Anyone know Peppertree Roger Smith?
I purchased a Pre-A Porsche 356 2pc. engine and it had the same decal in same spot!!
