Folks,
I actually hate to bring this up-----but----for a friend----what company do you think makes the best ones?
(I will be going to church tomorrow to confess my sins---please forgive me).

"For a friend?" Really Steve, is that the best you could do?
Like, I have a "friend" with a problem? Or my "friend" wants to ask your sister out, is she available?
To answer your question, I have always heard the Beck ones are the most well made, but Rusty Tubs has a different tail that the arches aren't so high, "corrective surgery" they call it. Apparently the one that everyone took the original molds of of had been repaired and the rear wheel arches were all wrong. You can read about it here:

Be sure to pass this info on to your "friend".... |

Well, if we're just collecting two cents worth here, I will note my long-time fondness for Beck's version. Build quality ranks high with me and if there is some minor anomaly, well its a replicar after all. Things like an arch line only matter if you are either concours bound (an obvious non sequitur), or if one is intent on fooling people.
The only important details are those perceived from the driver's seat. _________________ Keep 'em flying...

Photo is from one of the best Registry Holidays I have attended, Texas, 2005. Their People's Choice Concours awarded one or both of these Beck Spyders a Best of Show.....(likely because I didn't enter my airport rental PT Cruiser)......and they beat all of the nice "real" 356s there to pick from. |

In my opinion, Vintage Spyders makes the finest 550 replica. My brother owned one for years and I found the build quality to be superior.
