my first VW a sandrail

i have a 4 seater sandrail. it has a 74 1600 motor but its mated up to a 54 trans. i am looking for parts for the trans and someone to work on it. anyone know any place to get s parts for a trans that old?[img][/img][/list]

Do you know that the transmission is bad? What is it doing?
You may just have a clutch or shifter issue versus a bad tranny.

If the tranny is bad, replace it with a later unit. You will have to change the front transmission mount but that is it. The 54 is a crashbox transmission (non synchronous) which means you have to stop completely to shift into first gear.


You have to stay in the Swing axle family of transmissions...up to 1968 (early) NON IRS transmissions.

The cost of switching over to a good later model swingaxle will likely be cheaper than having to have your crashbox rebuilt.

replace it if it is the trans.

used trans at a junk yard is around 100.00 depending on who you call.
