I have heard some really sacary stories out there, mostly about shady engine shops. I would appreciate any suggestions for a rebuild kit supplier with quality parts and any "gotcha's" I should be aware of.

Sad Shady engine shops is not the norm as they stay in business only so long before the bad rep closes them down.

As for the parts that a person can buy are all the same basically.

Being a former VW parts house owner can attest to that as we buy whlse and sell retail.

So you purchase a rebuild kit then what.....your knowledge is limited and the engine case may or not be worth rebuilding again then what.

So your not sure but still attempt an assembly that takes a dump after a few miles then what.

I have seen those results as have others like myself.

Best bet would be to find/talk with a satisfied person who had an engine put together (self or shop) and go with those results.

Smile I have a Turbo 1776cc engine in a 66 bug.

Many on here will give you all kinds of suggestions re the building a 1776cc engine with bigger cranks etc that will cost YOU a lot of $$$$.

If that is what your looking for then wish you well.....on the other hand if your looking for a resonable 1776cc for the street I can offer my past results. One put togethee properly can give power and reasonable gas mileage w/o breaking the bank.

they come and go all the time
and some live forever. GEX ( the most hated, company of all times ,search)

small shops. you get mikey one week and larry the next,
who you get, is random, (vacation, sick, retired, etc)
IF you have ever worked in a big shop with like 50 guys.?
You would know that skills very. some do great work and use lists to check off. They are very consistent and make few errors. (cept on Mondays) Twisted Evil

That way they dont skip a step (100)

ok here is hit list;

find a local builder. that way you get 100% support
a 12month warranty, nothing less (if racing or buying a race motor, you get zip here.. . but some offer very expensive insurance policies, $3000+ ! hit)

ask for his build list. what they do?, a list of all checks, 1 liners.
(the hallmark of a pro,that,,, )

go to the performance section of this forum and see others posting their lists.
serious guys there...
last is the list of parts used?
new
rebuilt , regrind.
brand

research that, part, see if you are happy with those parts.
You can build a vw motor with ZERO VW parts... see that extreme?

if all that sounds too hard.?
then
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Aircooled-Net-Better-Than-Stock-BTS-New-1600cc-p/bts-1600.htm

on the wild side...
engine kits. (means nothing) but...
what does kit mean.
all parts,. sure kit
comes with jugs, bearings, rings pistons, and 8valves.

KIT GOOD
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/SCAT-Volksracer-Race-...ne-kit.htm

KIT BAD
if you don't know the case journal deminisons. how can you buy this?
see the warnings there.... DONT ASK , dont tell.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-1600cc-Volkswagen-Engin...mp;vxp=mtr

there are worse kits....
rings, bearings, gaskets in a box. + a roll of sand paper.

worse has no limits.
