After picking up my last DC I figured I was full up on buses, but when a 59 Double comes a knocking you let her in! I felt I paid a good price for it (maybe on the high side if you believe the local cluckings). Because it's everyday that these come up for sale locally Here it is safe and sound a few days ago;
Took off a few things, pulled the engine after I got it running. And the trans.
Spent some time cleaning the engine bay and painting it.
Galvanized metal is hiding what??
Tiny bit of bondo.

I got'er good all over ya see! Over the brake lines, over the whatever whatever, all over except for the shiny tag (Ever paint an engine bay? Not too fun, a little tight for my likes).
The plan is to have a year round driver so I don't want to worry about rust anywhere sneaky. That means in any nook or cranny. Plus I don't like a dirty/grimy engine area that even 'nice' buses have. It's gross, I don't like it. I will be rolling it over and painting the bottom too but probably grey/black ENDURA.
Plus I thought it was a good start to the project, something clean to look at while the rest of her gets ugly (for now).

Mine is also a daily driver. I used grey POT-15 in my gas tank area. I agree, working in confined areas suck. _________________ Looking for license plate donations (or super cheap). Do not need to be vintage. Would like to have plates from as many countries and states as possible. |

Yeah I did my 58 bug, the gas tank area in DC tops the cake, especially during the summer in AZ. _________________ Looking for license plate donations (or super cheap). Do not need to be vintage. Would like to have plates from as many countries and states as possible. |

Yup! Especially trying to weld in there But then again DC's are tops because they are so unique, that gas tank area is a pain but also one of my favorite 'features' of the DC.
Bugs don't have confined engine bays, the decklid comes off! Buses have immovable roofs in the engine bay. And the wheel well areas are traps. It's not too fun trying to paint the 'roof' of the engine bay (or wheel wells), or the arch over the trans. _________________ 57 PGSG 'Carpet Bus'

I've peeled back alot of rockers and everytime there's 'HOPE' that it will be ok. This time peeling back some galvanized metal, I felt that same HOPE!
Could it be? Just something to cover a dent and no rust??
Eeh, of course not. But it's not too bad
Strip of bondo!
What's under this one??
Looking GOOD!
WHAA! Yikes
But rockers are easy to repair. Just have to wait for parts. Of course. _________________ 57 PGSG 'Carpet Bus'

I love the peeling back photos, kind of like peeling a banana only to discover a big old brown spot. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

Not too many surprises left (Until the passenger rockers are peeled open that is).
Didn't get much time to work on her, so I stripped her down a bit.
It's not going to be 'show' quality but it should be pretty dece Pretty straight and not much filler except on the rockers. _________________ 57 PGSG 'Carpet Bus'

More sanding, fun! Not too many surprises except over the wheel well, but I think the PO was trying to get rid of the factory welds/imperfections.
Sanding gates = no fun.
911 Disc brakes?? Maybe!

Nice shut lines on the doors. Rust is way easier to fix than heinous collision damage. Of course, having neither would be sweet. _________________ Founding member of

We can dream! The doors shut soo sweetly, I love that.
I had a full 8 hours(!) to work on her so I got a little bit done. Inside were not many surprises, phew!
The 'holes' were off by a little bit, I can live with it! "Perfection comes with Delusion!" This is just a test fit shot.
Back to rocker fun! Passenger side. (Sorry I already opened it and then went back for the camera, so semi-surprise).
Wire mesh! But except for the bottom, it's pretty solid! Same for other side.
Pow!
The very rare, M - Coded bottom window.
Cleaning, de rustifying treatment, prime, paint.
Gett'n somewhere!

Doubles are fun because of all the bed storage space, but all of it has to be cleared away or it's not gonna get finished.
Anyone have suggestions as to what I should do for the bed? It's not perfect by any means but I don't want to spend my life making it 'nice'. I was thinking slicksand and abit of DA sanding?
Munched rear corner before..
Rocker.
Driver side. That yellow stuff is GOOP. I mean filler. I don't really know how to use it, and I am trying to keep it to a minimum. Going to sand most of it off like on my 58 Panel but it's gotta be done.
More filler on the nose.
