I'm trying to change the drive flange seals on the gearbox (091). Is there an easy way to remove the circlip that holds the flange on? The clip doesn't have the 'eyes' that other circlips have. Is there a special tool for these?

Man I fought that a long time and didn't get anywhere. For the first time ever went and bought a snap ring plier different than the simple basic assortment I had. Sears had it. It has kind of like a flat paddle surface instead of points. The paddle surface is serrated so it won't slip. Works fantastic. 4 seconds and done.

You need flat tip retaining ring pliers, Princess auto used to sell them but I can't find an example on thier website.

Ok fellas, I picked up this exact tool today and although it was a tight fit to get the tool in there I did manage to get the first retaining clip off. However, I bent it pretty good which leads me to believe that it's a softer metal than the spring steel I'm used to seeing for circlips. Anyway, that leads me to my next question: are these retaining clips available anymore? Bentley says to replace them but I can't imagine where I might find them. Has anyone else sourced them?

we have the rings:

http://www.germansupply.com/xcart/customer/product.php?productid=17155

i prefer pliers that have an internal vee-shaped tip for removing those clips, and preferably ones that have a compound action for more control.

i think they are the ones on this page, third set down from top.

I have had good luck with just bending them back to their original shape using a vise. You don't want to expand them anymore than necessary when taking them off or putting them back on.

How ever did you remove the CS cir clip that holds the gear on? Those plyers are a basic VW tool.

Thanks Scott. I did search your site before posting this but didn't think to call them 'rings'!

Thanks for the offer but I just ordered a couple from GS with the hope that they'll arrive Tuesday, just in time for my week off/engine & gearbox installathon.

3 times pulling crank gears I used the wrong type but they did work. The spread opening type with the 2 round pins. The pins straight on and not from the side of the cir clip. A real bitch but it finally worked. Can't approach the clip in that direction with the trans flange. That's the only one on the entire bus where the crude method didn't work. But they are all going to be so much easier in the future.

Another interesting use of that tool is you can use it to reach in and grab the distributer drive pinion and pull it out.

Did you use the tool to push the drive flange in first? It's not very hard to make and without it you will destroy those clips everytime.

Found this handy web page for the 020 transaxle.

http://www.brokevw.com/020flange.html

I don't have my Bentley handy - does the 091 have the springs behind the flanges?

The 091 has a spring washer located just under the circlip. 002, 3 and 5 rib have the split ring located under the drive flange.
On an 091 I get the circlip started then fit an appropriate sized socket over the output shaft. Use a hammer to smack the socket. This will compress the washer and seat the circlip in place. Piece of cake.
I usually grind the bills on the circlip pliers to fit the confined space in the drive flange. Makes the job quicker/easier.
