Posted: Tue Jun 26, 2012 12:29 pm Post subject: Anyone ever install an In-Line fuel shut off valve? |
|
|
I'm thinking of putting one in the line under my gas tank to make it easier to do maintenance that requires tank removal. I will be driving it to and from a friends house soon to have some welding done. He wisely wants the tank removed first. It would sure make things easier if I could limit the amount of gas that leaks out when I removed it.
Thanks!

| I have an electric fuel cutoff that shuts off the fuel when the key is turned off. I installed it thinking it might help if ever I had an engine fire based on a fire I had on my 66 bug in high school where the tank was not bolted in and I just pulled it out and the fire went out by itself. Never been tested out but it's a good theory. I don't know where I got it. All I know is it was from some Model T parts supplier that sends me a very nice expensive looking parts catalog every year now, even though I have contacted them and told them I don't have a Model T. |

I have one on my Sandrail. And since I run it once or so a month I'll turn it off before the engine is off and let it use the remaining fuel in the line then it doesn't get gummed up in the carb or whatever _________________ 1968 VW Baja D.D.

The outlet merely screws on the bottom of the tank, just get a valve that screws in.
Years ago on my type 2 I had a quick disconnect coupling that shut off fuel flow on both couplings when disconnected. Looked much like air compressor fittings. _________________ 74 181 Thing

I have a inline (close to the tank) small ball valve on both my VWs. Just put hose barbs on both ends. Cheap and easy and it hasn´t failed me yet. _________________ 1973 Thing/Safari

| You think a 1/4" clamped valve would work, or would it be too big? |

Do you have an inline shut off valve or one installed on the bottom of the tank? Or either?
Thanks for the link!

The one I used is just like the 6545. I think the 6542 might be a better fit as it looks smaller and more compact. _________________ 1973 Thing/Safari

Does the 6542 go in the bottom of the tank or inline? It looks like it is made more for a direct fit to the tank. |

Its hard to tell from the picture but I would think it could be adapted to the tank bottom. _________________ 1973 Thing/Safari

Dennis,
how does that reserve valve work? do you have to have a special tank or does it work with a regular tank? Or does it just pick up gas that the regular pickup wouldnt get? |

Hmm..well it explains how it works, but does it actually tap into fuel that would otherwise be unavailable?
it is a pretty cool setup. |

| it has 2 pickup tubes 1 lower 1 upper when the fuel level reaches the top 1 you run out of fuel ,switch to the lower pickup. i think it is about 1.8 gals differance. That way you always have 1.8 gals unless you forget to switch the valve back when you fill the tank up. |

Well, boys......
I'm picking up a 356 fuel cock for my '73. Where do you suppose I'd look for the "escutchion" with the lettering?
Thanks,
