Bought a crusty '63 off Craigslist for $225 on sunday, picked it up today. Think its going volksrod, maybe roadster or choptop.

Wasps claimed the inside so no pics of that till I get spray. Waiting to get approved to post at the Volksrod forum.

Go for it!

At least you saved it from the crusher!

Even the stock purists won't argue too much here.

Just a heads up for future transport and others who may be watching.

I would be careful using the rear bumper to hold your ratchet straps. If you get on the brakes hard that rear bumper may come off the car and allow it to roll forward!

Go around the rear axles and the front beam.

Do you have a good title for it that matches the pan numbers? Only reason I ask is because of that hood crest. Very few 63's had it unless it was a really early 63.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you! Now the real fun begins.

That car is pristine compared to what I found on a '63 two years ago. I had to scrap all sheet metal. The windshield fell out of it complete with the rubber and 2 incles of metal still attached. Talk about rust.
You have a fairly well preserved piece of history there.

Wow, that could be a sweet patina car. For what you paid you could make some money on it. Wheels, slammed beam and driving equals 4 to 6 grand in todays market.

The guy says its a good title, he has yet to drop it off.
I know the rear bumper wasn't the best but it was only a 10 min drive to the shop and very little traffic so I chanced it Embarassed
Chains went around front beam.

The first thing is to get it running and stopping. A shop vac and a trip to the car wash will precede that. And I supose I need to convert to 12v before I try to start it. I imagine I can use the gen from a 1600 SP will work if I swap the stand and switch fan hub? Gotta find be some 12v dash lights at least for the oil and gen lights. This project will reinforce the need for a bubble flaring tool for the brake lines. ( found I need that when I put rear discs on the Baja) And get a better idea of what is all rusted out and post up some pics of that. This is not a car I want to try to restore myself based on what I have seen of it so far. But I would not feel bad cutting it to keep it alive.
When I went to pay for it the guy said he sold it to his buddy because he thought I was going to scrap it, but because I rolled up in a baja he knew that was not the case so I got it.

Speaking of brake lines , the best fitting steel line set I ever installed came from JC Whitney. No flaring tool needed and every line was dead on length. 'Course, I could have gotten the only good set the manufacturer made that month, so this is not a blanket endorsememt for Whitney parts.

No wasps this morning, crawled in and got the chassis #, comes back built Jan '62, engine # as well looks to be a Jan '62. Seller dropped off the title to a few min ago. Titled as a 62, signed over but not notarized. Some more pics.

" This is not a car I want to try to restore myself based on what I have seen of it so far. But I would not feel bad cutting it to keep it alive. "

I would be in the same position with so much rust, though I have access to an excellent VW body repair person. Your Beetle will need at very least both full heater channels and rear floors, if not full floors. Having the original engine supports attempting to rescue the car in the form of a stock restoration, keeping it 6V. If you want to just try to get the engine running at home/shop, before you drive the car using 12V components, then yes, use a 12V generator and regulator and the 12V generator stand. Don't worry about the light bulbs or wipers if you don't use them, but 12V idiot lights should be used, since the 6V ones will probably burn out almost immediately if you power them up with 12V.

The color of your car is anthracite grey, which happens to be my favorite color on older Beetles. If you want to concentrate on getting the engine running and the brakes also, then keep the body/paint the way it is and maybe just invest $20 in sandpaper and spray cans to paint the wheels in the proper black/cream two-tone. You'll probably need new/good used tires anyway. A nice, convervatively appearing stock Beetle can be appealing in its "no frills" presence.

Well I had a '76 way back in college I built a Baja out of, and I didnt know much about working on cars, welding, etc. And I had pretty limited tools. The last 20 + years have been good to me in gaining experiance, equipment, and space to work. I Built this Baja but this thread has not been updated in a while as I went to another off road forum.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3060059&highlight=#3060059
And the beam I built for it.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3098838&highlight=#3098838
But I just dont want to put the time and $$ into this car to restore it given it's condition. But it's a great candidate in my opinion for a Volksrod. I also have this I am working on:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5798143&highlight=#5798143
The bus I plan on doing a decent job looking good and working good but a driver/camper.
I did get the title notarized today so I can go get the car inspected since it is an out of state title and I should have an Oh title in my name within the next week. Then I can unload it from the trailer into the shop. I just have to get a spot ready for it. Confused
