Wild guess: AM-antenna?

FM-antenna is something like 75cm or about 2 feet and 7 inches, but AM-antennas were longer, some had even 10 feet long.

Imho AM-spesific antennas are being replaced by AM/FM-antennas which are optimized to FM-frequencies, 87-108MHz.

1- did the type 34s ever come with a tachometer? If so where did it mount?
2- where did the original stereo speaker mount in type 34s?
3- What was the point of the round block-off to the right of the stereo? speaker or tach?

thanks,

Steve

My tach will go into the clock location and the clock will move to the speaker location. When (if) I add the radio, the speakers will go into the rear quarter panels. It's not the only way to go with it, of course.

1A). They were an option. It would be installed where the clock currently resides, with the clock moving to the hole right of the radio (LHD cars).
2A). The speaker was located behind the screened opening to the right of the radio. It's a single speaker hole, not a stereo. Wink
3A). It's not a block off hole, but a speaker opening (speaker mounts behind it).

Yup, my AM radio plays thru the original speaker grill opening. But my FM reciever plays thru a pair of 6 by 9's in a pair of small boxes behind the rear seat (can be removed).

Thanks for the tach/ speaker info. helpful as always.
thought I'd post a few pics of my 65. turns out the matching #s motor didn't so I rebuilt the existing motor all new to a 1600 with the dual solexes, new clutch and new transmission and a nicely designed type 3 ceramic muffler and header from Trimill. Added gas shocks, dropped the rear 2" total, added Oldspeed type 3 dropped spindles to the front, 15 x 5 replica fuchs in back and 15 x 4.5 in the front. Car rides and drives amazing. Added a sweet set of reupholstered seats that Greg Skinner sold me for a very fair price and car is super fun to drive now. My plan is to drive it like this with the crappy paint job 'til next November then have it torn down, blasted and brought back up restored.

Looks great!

I have some scruffy black door panels with good map pockets, along with a restorable lower trim strip. I might be able to scare up a black e-brake boot, but the grey ones are pretty scarce. I also have a decent original front trunk floor liner.

You need to bring that car by the house sometime so I can really go through it.

Right, but not exactly. According to the VW technical bulletin about installing a tach in a Type 34 (here) it is possible to install the clock in the speaker location if a radio is not installed. VW couldn't imagine the possibility that someone would need both a tach and a radio. Wink

The original Type 34 speaker has a complicated housing designed specifically for the area behind the dash and it wouldn't be easy to relocate elsewhere:

Though aftermarket speakers could be installed anywhere, of course.

I'm going run a tach on my own Type 34 but I'll leave the speaker where it was meant to be. My phone can tell me what time it is. Very Happy

I found these speakers, 6x9 with box that I velcro'd to the parcel tray for easy removal. They sound pretty darn good.

Immediately useful for me as someone has repaired the channels under the door poorly and door(s) doesn't fit properly.

Known measurements help a lot when trying to figure out what exactly is the problem.

Thanks a lot!

Just seeing how many T34 owners there are in Sydney and the possibility of organising a get together.

Question for the GURUS,

I recall that on my '64 and '65 type 34s, they both had a plastic cap with a drip rail and a drain on the uppermost front part of the door. My current car a '63 does not. I searched and I found Scott's car doesn't hace it eaither. Does anyone know when the doors changed?

Remind me to dig my T34 parts book out tomorrow and I'll check. My '66 has the plastic there also.

According to the parts book, there was always a seal on that upper front door area, but a channel and was added from chassis 109825. The seal appears to have been physically lengthened at that time, as well.
