Yup... it's official. I couldn't help but to climb into it after blowing snow this afternoon. Juices flowing...

Twin Cities VW Club put on their annual show today. Bruce Meyers was there... really neat guy! Didn't get a picture or anything but it really got me thinking about my buggy again... again. _________________ -Ben

Might actually do some work on this car yet this summer!... probably!
I had to rearrange my garage recently and it got me thinking that anytime I move this car around I always have to air up the tires first. Might as well figure out a better solution. I've got the tires that will be used under it from another project from years ago but no wheels that they'll fit in the proper lug pattern. I'll be using 235/60s up front and 295/55s in the rear... obviously the stock 4.5" wheels aren't going to cut it.
I love the idea of going old school and recycling my stock wheels by banding them. The plan is to be able to keep the stock hub cap and I know that I could cut up a 15x8" Chevy truck wheel for its barrel but there's just the thought of cost. Why spend the cash when I can tinker around for a couple weekends and do it myself for next to nothing? The problem comes in when doing research on the banding itself. I know that I have the skill and the equipment to do it properly. What I don't know is if it's legal to run on the road. Sure, you can flip over to the classifieds and purchase wheels that have been set into wider barrels, and one can even find a shop that still widens wheels by banding... but it is legal? Physically I know that it's possible to do as so many on several forum sites post up that they've either done it themselves or have had it done. Then there's the horror stories of wheels flying apart that I can only imagine was due to poor craftsmanship. Personally, I wouldn't run any banded wheel that I didn't know who did the work. If it were my wheels and my welds, I wouldn't think twice.
Anyhow... legal? Would you run them? _________________ -Ben

Progress!
Did some exploratory surgery on one wheel before doing all of them. Tomorrow I'll finish it up and have a tire mounted to see how everything went. The wheel is within the same tolerance that it was before it was cut. I think this was the worst of the four wheels that was on the buggy as far as straightness. Had a pretty good size weight on it anyhow. We'll see how it goes balancing. _________________ -Ben

Wow! If it turns out straight, very nice work. If it was not to arduous of a task, you could make some money at this. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Thanks! I had a little bit of time invested in this. The next three will definitely go a bit faster.
Not sure I'd want to start doing this for anyone though. I understand that there are still shops out there that do this, but what they have that I don't is business liability insurance. Like I said before, I wouldn't even think twice about my own wheels but I personally would not run a set of wheels that I didn't know who did the welding. _________________ -Ben

... and now it's black.
Needed to add another 4.5" to the original wheel to make room for some big ol' 295/55s. The fronts will be the same BFGs but in a 235/60 size. To keep side wall bulge the same, the front wheels won't be banded as much as the rear. Getting this one mounted/balanced this afternoon. Stay tuned. _________________ -Ben

IT BALANCED!!!
Yup... it's wide...
Ended up with a 15"x8.5" wheel when it was all done. Then came a little bit of a problem when it came to taking a closer look at the other three wheels. So... one of them says "4JX15" on the face by the lug bolts and the other three say "4 1/2JX15"... and I bet you can guess which one is odd man out, right?
Now I'm on the lookout for either one more "4JX15" or three. _________________ -Ben

Thanks, dude! Really hit a wall with this whole 4" wheel search though. Bummer... I was hoping to be doing the other three tomorrow. _________________ -Ben

I gave my last two 4.5's away last fall to a fellow club member, (local VW club).
Can you not add 0.5 inch to the band width? _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

The problem comes in with the backspacing that I'd have to take .5" out of the 4.5" wheels to match what I already did with what was the 4". I've got some feelers out though. Something will work out... probably. _________________ -Ben

I know... I know... I should've just posted at least a couple pictures in my last post instead of breaking the cardinal forum rule of "new information".
Dude left a tire on one that he didn't want. Gnarly old monster of a snow tire... almost like a big dirt bike tire.
Hopefully start cutting on the new wheels this week. _________________ -Ben

Agreed. However, the same picture showing the depth of the new wheel profile also shows the budget I'm working with...
I like the thought that ever piece on the car has been worked over in some way by me. I've built a few vehicles from start to finish but never one that I completely started from scratch. It's almost turned into a challenge for me... "How cheap can I finish the car while still producing the same quality that I'm used to?" _________________ -Ben
