My Deserter body was warped just like yours. I had to do the same things you are doing in front and the edges. The back was just like yours too. I snuck it down a bit at a time and drilled bolts to hold it in place. It took a little time but I got the body to conform to the chassis no problem. It took a few weeks the ease it into shape but I was in no hurry. I still haven't decided on a body lift yet though.
I like your clamping strip.

Thanks, dude! I'm fighting the weather right now too. Windchill advisory this whole week so that isn't helping. I heat my shop with a kerosene heater but even when pointed straight at it (at a safe distance, of course) the body isn't warming up much... along with everything else in my shop. I'm in the same boat though... no real hurry. _________________ -Ben

I used the premium house brand at my local Ace Hardware. Been using the stuff for years and it always lays down smooth for me. The can has a nice directional spray pattern too.

I wanted to spend some time with this today, but things just weren't cooperating with me. All I had to do was drill four holes, tap them, and bolt down the rear of the body. Five drill bits, a jammed drill chuck, and then a broken tap later I hung it up an decided to clean the shop instead.
The body tightened down pretty good. I need to cut a small strip of steel to make for a more even clamping surface like along the sides. There's about a 1/4" gap on the left side but the other is where the tap still is. Going to have to lift the body off to get it out.
I started to take a look at where to put a battery too. It'll be tight but I think I'll be able to put it on the left side under the body. I keep going back and forth on whether or not to cut out the current battery box but in the end it's really not going to solve any problems as there's the same size space on either side underneath. Right now I like the idea of using the existing battery box as lockable storage. _________________ -Ben

Not directly on the buggy, but I've been playing around with my bender.
It's just 1" schedule 40 pipe, but I figured I'd better start playing with something a bit cheaper. Been figuring out how to layout bends where I want too. I recently picked up a Jeep that needed a bit of a face lift.
... then finished them off with some satin black and bedliner...
Overall, I'm not 100% confident running it yet. I want to make up a set for the rear of the Jeep as I still have pipe left over. Then I'll probably move a little bigger to 1 1/4" pipe to get the bender ready for some 1 5/8" tube. _________________ -Ben

Nice!!!
When I made mine, I never thought about an adjusting screw to aid in the clamping. Might have to reto-fit a couple of my dies. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

The first retainer shoe I made up was similar to yours. Made a couple bends and I didn't like how difficult it was to get the bolt out of the dye. That was the second round and it's way more user friendly. _________________ -Ben

Bingo!
That is why I may go back and re fit some of my shoes. Glad it is working for you. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Hello again! Been a little while since I've done anything with this thing and I still haven't. Been picking at Jeep stuff lately and I've got a bunch of projects lined up for one of them that'll need to get wrapped up before the end of May. Needing the shop, the buggy had to get put outside for the day. Not all a bad thing though. I heard it creaking all day in the sun after getting the body bolted down to the frame. That's good... it really needed a good sunny day to help the fiberglass relax a bit.
Strange feeling I got today after pushing it out. I walked up the apron into my shop, turned around, and in my head I saw it completed! It was gray (I have been thinking orange but the gray was nice), the windshield was on, the headlights, the cage... it was done! It made me smile and it got my wanting to be working on that today instead of some dumb, rusty Cherokee.

Very cool!!! Yours definitely gets me thinking orange again. I've never found a picture or physically saw one of these bodies that's been finished nicely... they've always been looking like it sat outside all its life. The lines on yours is so clean and crisp! Very good job, sir! A huge tip of the cap! _________________ -Ben

Hey thanks neohic, trust me it is no award winner. I kinda took over the project after some hack did everything wrong! But hell yeah i was stoked to see someone else building one! Im trying to think of a good name for my buggy if anyone has any input, i am going to have some pinstripping done i am leaning toward "Agent Orange" even though that's kinda messed up lol.
Oh and i wouldn't mind a copy of that linton instruction pamphlet if you dont mind?!!! |

What I scanned and posted on page 1 of this thread is all the pages from the booklet. I did that for anyone know might want to see an original builder's guide, and also for myself as the original has seen better days.
I'd be curious to see more pictures of yours and the work you've done to it. Better start on a build thread for it! _________________ -Ben

Just got back home from having dinner with the ECVW guys. What an amazing group! A huge tip of the cap to them for making a drive like that! Very inspiring to see those cars and to know what they go through.
Got home and had a long talk with mine. Seems as though it's got some shaping up to do.

They are definitely a bunch of great guys! I know it's great to put a face with a name, and you couldn't ask for a better group. You know, if you get that one done by October, Manx on the Banx is a great time there in Outerbanks, NC. And it's a family friendly affair. I'll have at least one of my buggies there, if not both of them.

Thanks! They were actually running really late by the time they got to Alexandria. I was patiently waiting across the highway in a parking lot that I could see them coming. Almost three hours of sitting there I just lit up! That chain of buggies rolling down the highway and there was clearly Joe in the middle of them all... bright orange! I saw him pull off from the group to fill up and he was the first that I talked to. Beautiful work and amazing craftsmanship on the Puzzle Manx. I can only imagine that you've got the same on yours!
As for October... yeah ... I'm sure it's possible, but also highly doubtful. I've got a bunch of house work that needs to get done yet this summer and I'm sure that'll take most of the "fun money" away. That, and October is well into the season of putting the summer toys away. Winter is really a good time for me to really devote time to projects anyhow. With the short amount of time we get up here of enjoyable weather, I find it's far too easy to play with projects instead of actually working on them.

No updates since July?! Well... there hasn't been any updates on my end either. Jeep projects have slowed down and I totally gutted my bathroom and redid everything in a week. What to do?... what to do?... why not pick at the buggy a little bit?! Not so fast, there... For what I had planned next on the list, I first needed to get my bender working for 1 5/8" tube. Then that turned into needing an extra set of hands. I did the same as I did before only this time I drilled out a nut to keep the keeper bolt centered on the retainer.
Then came another fun thing...
... and then another to help me duplicate angles better.
Time to work on the buggy again? Finally... yes. Funny thing about working on it today. I intended to be working on the front bumper, but it just wasn't working for me. The lines were there, but everything just turned out too big.
So? Why not try it on the rear? I had zero ideas on what to do with that, so why not?
I like it! I regret cutting the tube short at the ends, but I'm pretty sure the metal won't mind getting a bunch more added back on. I'll add a receiver tube too and all the bracing to go with it, but it's got the look that I didn't know I was looking for. Tomorrow I'll probably bend up another front only a little narrower. _________________ -Ben

WHA'?! Two updates in one day?! I really wasn't planning on working on it anymore today, but... why not? Fancy new bumper now hangs on its fancy new mounts.
Must be the Jeeper in me that absolutely has to have at least one tow point both front and rear.
Pulled it off to fully weld it. Pretty standard way of mounting it.
Obligatory close up of a weld...
Very happy with how it came out.
Now to get back on the rear! _________________ -Ben

Had a real humid week! The newly finished but unpainted front bumper turned a little orange. A quick scuff, prime, and paint solved that problem. It'll probably get another few coats in the future, but for now it'll keep it looking nice. Had to throw the headlights back on for a finished look. I also found a 1965 license plate in my stack of plates... not sure where it came from, but it was in there.
As for the rear, I returned to the failed attempt at the front bumper and kept going with it. It's all the same angles as the front so I think it matches really well. It grew legs...
... and then some other stuff happened...
Mounts that need some cleaning up and straightening...
Future tie-ins for the cage...
Depending on how loud the exhaust is... whenever that happens that I find out... the exhaust might change. It's not near as tight as the pictures look at the top of the "mufflers" but I like the idea of hacking them off and adding a couple of small real mufflers in their place. I need to pull it off and fully weld everything, but until then...
