Another unauthorized book review from me, since we were at it...
Bernt Wiersch; Die Käfer-Chronik (Delius Klasing 2005) got here in time for christmas. It's in German, but I still remember a lot from school, and Die BräzelKäfer was no problem, so I got it from Amazon. This book is from the days before BOB and the arrival of VW 38/06, and it shows. Although it has the same amount of text, it is more vague and less detailed when it comes to the prototypes and production cars' development. The book covers the whole story up to la Ultima Edicion, however not very consistingly. Development of the various production facilities is mixed in with photodocumentation of the various cars, there are just a few pages between the Oval introduction and the 1985 Fusca. Surely, 80% of the beetle's development happened between these two years and should have been assigned a more detailed description.
The book is out of print I think, and spurred by the incredible inflation of BOB, it is already starting to increase in price. However, if you have all the other standard books, you won't find too much new stuff here. Unless you get it for less than 50 USD, it is not essential.
A couple of real Goofs is that when they list the yearly changes, they don't understand the concept of model year. Just an example; The big side window beetles arrived for the 1965 model year, but the cars were available from august 1964. In the book, the big window is described somewhat as a mid year change of 1964, which it was not. And neither is it necessary to list the 4 cylinder aircooled boxer as a defining feature of a certain year, since no production beetle ever had anything else.
The best part of the book is actually the front cover picture, which I put up here if someone wants it. Sorry about the Ovals.

So i was chatting to my mums fella today, he was telling me about when he was stationed in Germany. He told me one year 1960 or 61 he was stationed in Dusseldorf and went on to say they had an exibit showing war vehicles for them to view and look at, he said with these vehicles was a prototype Beetle there with this guy telling people all about it he said apparently it was the first Volkswagen. So thats when i started getting very interested so i showed him pictures of all early VW prototypes, his memory of it isnt great but he remembers the front to be not as long as your normal Beetle and a bit cut off. So of all the prototypes i showed him the V1 looked to be the one he say and recodnised it from the picture.
Ive been trying to Google any information about this display if theres any pictures that survive but there doesnt seem to be much really.
Anyway i know its not much but i thought id share it _________________ stetoppingphoto |

Maybe what he saw was the NSU Type 32, a prewar prototype (not exactly Volkswagen yet), that's actually in VW museum for a long time.

"... his memory of it isn´t great ..."
But after 50 years he can tell it was that one and not the other one of similar looking cars?!?
I am sure if such a prototype would had been around in 1960 and was recognized as what it was , we would know about him today. And it would still be visible today. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I do agree with you on that. But something could mabye of happened to the car, i remember reading of them museum cars that fell off a wagon was it?
This was a prototype and one that looked different to a normal Beetle, as said the guy that was presenting it at the time explained it as being the first prototype so it is interesting. _________________ stetoppingphoto |

The "fallen from wagon" one was the first modern Porsche, the 356 central engined prototype. And even then that's was just a minor setback, they put it back together shortly after =) |

No problem. It will look great in the vintage oval photos thread. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Okay, for lack of a better thread I'm bumping this one to post old W30 (or VW30) photos. (The other W30 thread is really for modern reproductions.)

If just one of these cute little cars would show up in a barn soon, we could all sleep happily, not having nightmares about the horrid replicas produced in recent years. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that anyone was able to salvage a whole or parts of the bodywork. German efficiency and SS supervision saw to that.
The D'iteren replica is the closest I guess, but isn't the ride height a little bit low?

No no no! I brought this thread back up to post pictures and discuss the originals. There's already a thread that goes into excruciating detail about the replicas!
