Starting to rebuild this rail we traded a boat for. It was street legal in IN but not here in FL. There is a lot of work to be done and a lot to be fixed & changed. Ant tips or advice will be appreciated! I will post pics along the way.[break] [/img] _________________ Sand soon! |

Good looking car! Check with your local DMV and find out what it would take to make street legal in your area. I believe the two amber lights in front would be to close together to be turn signals and the headlights need to be on the front, not midway. Probably need turn signals, wipers etc. Good Luck, John _________________ Panic, Chaos and Disorder, My work here is done! |

x2 looks like it just needs a little loving.
Dale M has a bunch of simple wiring diagrams to get your car up to DMV specs. might be a matter of just moving some light of the lights around and adding a couple. http://www.mydune-buggy.com/home2/index.php

get the list and then tell us what you need and then we can show/tell how to fix your issues. you might even find a friendly inspection station guy to get you a copy of their check off list. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy
sand it, fill it, paint it, throw some mud on it and then baja it. |

Don't worry about making it street legal, you're fine.
Our buggy has no floor (has expanded steel) no body, no windshield, no turn signals, and I drive by cops all the time without issue. I also have an open megaphone exhaust. Just don't drive like an a**hole and you're fine.
I was nervous at first about cops, but we've had it on the road since 2007 with no second looks (other than them waiving at us).
My rail is titled, insured, and tagged as a 72 VW beetle.
One thing you may want to consider is putting disk brakes on the rear. I run disks on the rear with no front brakes and my buggy stops fine, even with 31x10.5 all terrains on the back.
I see in your sig that you may want to take this thing off road. Not sure where you're at in Florida, but if you don't mind towing up to Ocala, we ride up there a few times a year. We also ride in Inverness in the Withlacoochee State Forest which is basically as far as Ocala as far as you're concerned. Off road is TONS of fun! _________________ Reasons to hate me:

MOST law enforcement will give you a pass if just like you said are not an a$$, In most places turn signals are not required, hand signals work fine, think of all the harley guys....same goes for loud exhaust.
If you have your paperwork in order in some states you are ok...now in MO not so much....if they decide to go after you they can and will, you are not driving a VW beetle anymore but something home built and if you want to be in the free and clear you need to go over all the hoops to make it legal. Pan type buggies are ok, but for some reason the rail is not....go figure. |

Wow thanks for the replies. I have learned a lot about this by just researching this forum. The aluminum bumper is coming off as it is off a 4 wheeler. My Bro inlaw is fabing up a new bumper and they will mount there. In the pic I had already removed the front headlights as I have 4 new ones. I was wondering how the Micky Ts on the back will be in the sugar sand down here? I dropped a few $ on some new parts and can't wait to see this progress. I would love to bring it up near Ocala! We got a great trailer with it for $200. I will post pics soon. They say the best day of owning a boat is when you sell it...well we did good here by trading it! Thanks everyone! _________________ Sand soon! |

Had an interesting bout with the starter ( so we thought ) turns out the bolt holding the flywheel came loose. We ordered new dowels and should have it running as soon as they get here. My brother was amazed at how fast and easy the motor was to pull. Getting more hands on than I ever have my life. Wish I would have started this hobby when I was younger! _________________ Sand soon! |

Not sure on those tires.
I run a set of bald all terrains, and they still dig in to the sand, so those smooth tires may do well. I have a feeling it will be like driving on ice though if you're trying to go fast through the trails, but that sounds pretty fun
We'll be spending 4 days in Ocala Labor Day weekend if you're interested?
Send me an email to so I can add you to our distribution list. _________________ Reasons to hate me:
