Hi everyone i have had a shifting issue with my bay.. mostly with first and second I have replaced the rear coupling and tried to adjust the floor adjustment from the shifter but i didn`t solve the problem... could it be the front bush?? what symptoms would it have and what needs to be done to replace it? thanks a lot Ian _________________ I`d rather push a volkswagen than drive a ford.... |

Remove the skid plate up front and inspect the bushing at the front of the linkage. If it is torn, worn or dry, replace it.
Did you do the linkage adjustment properly when you replaced the rear coupling?

The front part of the shifter is different depending on what year it is. Since you don't list your year in your avatar or signature yet it is hard to answer your question. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Yeah,
We've all got experience with similar problems but we need more specifics in order to provide the best answer. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

So you have the late style bushing at the front, remove the pedal pan as mentioned and have a look, any side play in the rod at the front is unacceptable and can make it hard to find some gears. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I have my 73 rod out today for new bushings and it is a very simple rebuild, just pull the motor and trans and it all comes out in seconds. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. You don't have to pull the motor or trans to replace the front bushing under the cab floor (just incase the last post got nai in a little panic) _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Here's a pic of the front end of the shift rod going through the bracket with the bushing missing.

That is the tube the shift rod goes through, the rod itself is gone in that pic and so is the boot that covers that tube. The front most shuttlecock bushing has one nub hole on the rod and the circle metal clip goes on it, not the rear most bushing. But my bushings came incorectly made for my application. The shuttle cock with a groove for the ring, had 2 nubs molded on it, so one nub had to be cut off to fit the front most bushing onto the rod. Also the piss poor quality is barely able to hold the metal ring steady, plus the metal ring is too big, use the stock one. I hate poor quality stuff, it reeks of China to me. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. Oh ok, it uses a hollow shift rod? I guess they were getting cheap in the end. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

Now I see, that is the front shift rod, not the rear shift rod. The front end of the rear shift rod is where the shuttle cock bushing goes, and the replacement part I got was poor quality. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. Ok, I also see now that that 78 front shift rod is not the same as the one in my 73. Mine doesn't have a bushing like that or that bracket it sits in.
behind that hole in the frame is no bracket or bushing , the next bushing is on the solid shift rod inside the frame and tube. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

You must have a very low VIN for a 73. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

that is a 1972 and earlier shifter. Check your front vin, rear vin near the motor and M-code to see if they match. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
