|

Finally Bought my first beetle, after searching and digging for months and traveling the tri state area I found this little boy 10 miles from home, go figure.
I took a couple of hrs from work to bring him home. I'll post more pics later when I get home.

Hahaha, that boy on two feet is my oldest son Daniel, the PO drove the car home behind me so I didn't have to go rent a trailer. Nicest gentleman I'v ever met. He said "THE REACTION FROM YOUR TWO BOYS WAS WELL WORTH THE TRIP" (my boys didn't know I was bringing the beetle home today)
So, I had 3 fail attempts to buy a beetle in the past month, a '66 sedan that was sold to someone else the day I was renting a trailer to come pick it up and a '62 rag top project as well, sold after being promised to me. And then out of the blue came this beauty (As they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder") 10 miles from my house and in great shape at a very friendly price tag of $3K.
True, it is not the sliding ragtop I wanted but my wife and two boys are already head over heals with this one, and so am I.
It's a 1964 European delivery car, matching body and pan and it looks like the motor is original too, but I need to do some more research on that.
Floors and heater channels are rock solid, body has some surface rust here and there an a few bubbling spots as well that new attention but no holes. I was amazed when I opened the engine compartment and the way the tin and motor look in general
Made in "West Germany" that can't be too new
Chrome is decent, headlights are pitted badly but nothing a re crome won't fix.
Bumpers seem to be original, it has the original carpet and rubber mats
Rubber mats in good condition carpet will have to be replaced eventually.
Seat covers gave me hope when I saw the car and I found the original seat upholstery under them but it is fabric and badly stained. I don't know If I'd want to keep that, we'll see.
This is the worst spot
Paint seems to be original but it's hard to tell, if it's not then it was an amazing re spray way back when. I polished an area on the rear fender that looked dead and with a bit of elbow grease brought it back to life
Then I opened the trunk and my heart skipped a bit when I saw this
All original sekurit glass including an almost perfect windshield.
Door panels seem OG but I don't have a way to tell for sure

The odometer is in kilometers -of course- and it shows 60,375 clicks and as much as I would love to believe this it just seems somehow not possible. I assume it rolled once? Tho I heard not long ago that once they roll the numbers don't align anymore but that might be a wife's tale.
Gas gauge seems in fairly good condition, it is not VDO I guess that's normal.
Car came original with no radio but the po installed a radio in it and lost the blank plate
On the bright side he gave me 2 other radios, a motorola and a saphire I. A batery tender, a 6V battery charger, a copy of the How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive 19 Ed: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot and a Chilton VW beetle manual. |

AND HERE IS THE BAD PART:
Passenger side rear fender close to the quarter
Above driver's side door
Sunroof siliconed shot Goldie crank inside broken
Passenger side quarter not rotted thru but nasty
And that's what I've been able to find so far. It has new brake lines, and voltage regulator.
Love the fact that I am the 3rd owner, that it was imported from Germany by the Og Owner and that no one butchered it along the way and it was kept so OG, the way I like them.
I plan to keep it 6V since it will never be used as a daily driver and that it is an OG numbers matching car.
I wanted a sliding rag roof but in the end this came in budget friendly at $3000 and I am happy with it.
I know its not an Oval or a split but I love it and it will give us a lot of fun while we drive it and slowly restore it.
More pics will be coming as we start fixing it up.
Hope you guys like it too |

Is it? Bummer! I guess I need to hunt a period correct one now, oh well.
I see that ATF on it. Is that automatic transmission fluid? Is it from an autostick car?
Thank you |

On the back side of the speedo there should be a date stamp.
Nice car. As neat as the sunroof is, it might be the cause of some of your rust issues. The drain tubes may be clogged. There's alot of post about repair and parts for this style of sunroof.

Thanks, that's at the top of my list. I will order the parts from WW this weekend to tackle the sunroof and drain tubes. And yes, sun roofs are a major PITA. I had to take my dodge ram appart to fix it and clean the tubes. I hope this is easier than my truck's |
