Going to sell my bay panel (non running) and going to look at a 86 tomorrow.
I searched the forum and did not find anything glaring I should look out for. Feel free to enlighten me. I plan on removing the middle seat using it for camping if I buy it... just would need to throw some curtains in it. The heads have been replaced along with some other misc parts... has some body damage that I can fix or live with.
One question, would I have to replace the ac compressor and assorted parts to for the updated Freon? _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

Re the body damage: I have almost the same crease. It popped open the seam sealer on the wheel arch, which allowed water into the rocker, now it's rusting out on the bottom. Check the sealant.
To change refrigerant, just put in a new reciever-dryer, and get a R-134 conversion kit, it chemically alters the existing oil to be compatible with the new stuff. Very easy. _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

Really? You found no mention of leaking heads (yours hopefully fixed - a plus),
manual tranny and/or connecting rods grenading at 150k miles, rear heater leaks,
low oil pressure, brittle plastic coolant tower or thermostat housing, hacked air flow
meter, locked up rear drums, worn throttle body & switch, under rated tires, seized
blower motors, rusted/leaking windshield seals, corroded grounds, cooked coolant hoses...???
None of this? Really?
How many miles on this rig? Manual or Auto?
Oh wait, you're just worried about curtains & the AC.
Never mind - good luck.
PS: Sorry about your mellow... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Kinda of tough to look for those issues if ya don't know to look for those issues... thanks for the guiding light.
Mellow not harshed... mellow harshed if I buy a rig with all those problems! _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

the AC hoses if original are likely to need replacement They are long hoses. old hoses tend to leak thru the rubber (millions of little tiny leaks) it may hold the freon for hours or months, but eventually the old rubber hoses will leak thru the rubber. read oup on this site for economical replacemet options. the VW dealer hoses are pricey. other option cost much less. (use of industrial hydrolic hoses )
the 1986 is a great year, you got the biggest motor!!!!
besure to put some seam sealer on the seams in the damaged area aap even if you decide to wait on the repair, you will want to seal to keep water out in mean time. simply painting wont stop the water fom getting into a seam. |
