Got it at a show. But you can probably get one on ebay pretty readily. What I like about this one is that you can put whatever you want in the window The thing to consider is that the knob, as you use it, starts to dig into the steering wheel, so if you have a vintage steering wheel that you want to preserve, suicide knob is not the way to go.
Here's one very similar to the one I have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARILYN-MONROE-SUICIDE-SPI...mp;vxp=mtr

Thanks. Do you mean 15" wheel with 165 45's or 66-67 only with early caps and 165 45's? |

Experimenting a little with exhaust. The last set of pipes that I bought showed signs of rusting within the first month. So I thought I'd try something new, so I went down to the local steel supply place and asked them to cut me a couple of foot long sections of 35mm stainless steel pipe. Curious to see how it'll sound since they don't have baffles.
Anyone know if it'll affect engine performance?

Looks cool. I doubt it will affect it too much, other than maybe a back pressure issue?

Should be fine. They sell aftermarket tips that fit in there anyway that are just straight through. I took a stock muffler, cut it in half, hollowed it out, welded it back up, and welded 1.5" ID pipes in the ends for tips. Sounded good actually! |

Tried to bleed the brakes last night and could not get a stiff pedal at all. Went through about a pint of brake fluid with no luck. This morning I decided to take it to a local mechanic, trouble is I had to e-brake it all the way there (about 2 miles)...scary.
Made it to the shop. Boy it felt good to drive it, low and slow
It was like dropping a child off at school for the first time.
A little bit later I got some bad news from the shop...they got all the air out of the system, but somehow, during the time that the car was apart, the master cylinder froze up. Luckily, the mechanic said that he wouldn't double charge me to install the master cylinder and re-bleed the brakes. I just have to decide what I want to install.
So while researching lowering topics I learned that a lot of guys install dual phase master cylinders when installing 4 wheel disc brakes. I only have front disc, but am considering the dual phase.
Any recommendations? |

Starting to mock up the wheel cap. I haven't installed clips yet, but stuck the early cap on to get an idea. I'm not convinced at the single tone with the chrome cap. Looking at options, maybe a 2 tone gloss rim with a flat painted cap, color to match the darker tone. Any Photoshoppers out there wanna take a shot?!

Playing around a little bit with the hub caps. Started with some clear adhesion promoter followed by some rubbing with some scotch-brite. Definitely has a vintage stainless look.
The other day I was at home depot and saw some tint paint in a rattle can. Maybe I'll do a little more experimentation tomorrow...

I got the car back from the mechanic today. Dual circuit master cylinder with reservoir installed. Stiff pedal is back.
Side note: I have the Empi disc brake kit. When I originally got the beam, the calipers said R on the right and L on the left when viewing the beam from the front. I questioned it because I thought R should be on the "passenger side". I called the guy who assembled the beam and he said "oops, switch them". I called Empi to verify and, to my surprise, they couldn't tell me how they stamp their calipers, so he couldn't say if it was right or wrong...so I switched them.
The mechanic said that he couldn't get a stiff pedal with the calipers how they were, so they switched the calipers back and they worked. So, in short, with my kit the R goes on the drivers side, but per Empi customer support, different kits may be stamped differently. Go figure...
Once I got the car home, I did a little dialing in of the suspension. I was driving around a bit and was scraping at just about every block...
Before adjustment...
I had about a 1/2 inch of thread left. First I adjusted about 1/2 of that out. Dropped the car and didn't see much of a difference, so I jacked her back up and took up the rest...
Here's the after, I went from about 20 3/4" to about 21 1/2"...
I was a little afraid, because that was just about all the adjustment I could do before replacing the threaded adjusters with longer ones. I gained only about 5/8"-3/4" of height so the car pretty much still looks the same, but I'll tell you, the ride is much better. I took a ride to test it out (about 5 miles) over railroad tracks, speed bumps, you name it. Didn't scrape ONCE! I'm happy now...

Are you front calipers the aftermarket dual bleeder style Ghia/type 3 replacements? Could be marked L/R depending on where the bleeder is located. Thats about the only reason I could see why they would be side specific. |

Yeah, that's pretty much what the mechanic told me. _________________ My 63 build thread - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=520975&highlight= |

The calipers for the wide 5 kit are side specific due to the location of the bleeder. If you install the caliper according to the "stamp" the bleeder will not be on the top of the caliper and will not allow you to get all the air out. EMPI knows if this problem. Just make sure the bleeder is on top and dont worry what the caliper is marked. |
