2.5L Subi conversion, my... 69th.
Van was running good with a good 2.1L before the conversion
All coolant line and radiator are 6 months old.

It's Saturday night and still at the shop trying to bleed a van Smile

In the shop:
Rad fan start at normal rad temps.
Return line is hot at engine
Engine run to cold
(under 185 when the rad fan start, should be around 200F)

Wile driving (2-4 mile):
Rad become colder and colder
Return line at engine is cold! I mean cold. (it's 34F up here outside)
Engine is to hot 205F (should be around 190-197 at most)

The funny thing is it's a new coolant pump and T-stat.

I bet it's a new defective T-stat.

2000rpm, all coolant port close, I open the rad bleed screw and nothing... woops, poring out after 5 min for about 20 sec then stop for another 30 sec or so, poring out again then stop again... ha ha ha.

I have seen some weird thing over the years but this one....

Ben

I have heard that the coolant tank seperator inside the radiator could crack.
and allow coolant to just enter then leave the radiator w/o running across the tunes/fins..

not sure if this would cause your circumstance... maybe someone hooked the rad hoses up bassAckwards?

I'm eager to hear when we/you get a solution.

Once, A brand new heat exchanger I used on my jet boat was plugged with sand from the casting foundry. Something is restricting flow...maybe?

We had a newish water pump get squirrelly and intermittent on us in our old mazda MPV a bunch of years back, and it caused all kinds of weirdness on a roadtrip, resulting in lots of expensive repairs before someone figured it out.

Dunno if that's your issue, but maybe worth swapping in another pump to eliminate that possibility?

first guess would be tstat.... got an IR temp gun to blind yourself with? Extremely useful for troubleshooting.

Forgot my Ir at home again... grrrr.

I just tested the second new T-stat and it's working properly, I don't see why the other one would bad.

Funny, beside the Subi one I put a VW one, it doesn't open as much even in boiling water. But it's old and as been sitting on shelf for along.

The EX thank is quite low this morning, I have decided to drive it again like that.

If air was trap for any reason this will have been my hardest bleeding ever, VW included.

I once fought with bleeding an engine swap..It turned out the P.O. stuffed a rag deep into one of the hoses that I chose to reuse. I guess he did it to prevent coolant from dripping out on him....

That was fun to find. I got to the point where I figured something had to be blocked and started flushing everything with a garden hose.

yea, but this van drove 200 miles to my shop. I drove the van stock.

I lost 3-5F... changing the T-stat even If I'm sure it's not that.

Read above, i said to Insycro that if it was a bad and brand new Subaru T-stat that was bad I would trow it away so hard that it would end up in it's backyard.

That is 8-10 hours in the garbage for me, I call them glitch's.

After changing the T-stat for another new one and bleeding the van for the 4th time I went for a ride (VERY NERVOUS ONE) and the temp was fine and where it should be.

The faulty thermostat was NOT stuck open or close, it was working but I'm not sure if it was working properly. The fact that now it's all fine mean that the thermostat was not doing a proper job.

Did you check the thermostat operation? It takes literally a few minutes.
That is what dylan would do...

NOT AT ALL bro, just trying to add some humor in my thread Smile
Men I wish I could sometime have a more elaborate English.

You suggested that the T-stat could be bad, I replied, if your right I'll trow it so far that it will end up in your backyard (so you can have a look at it) Smile

And your where right!

Finally it end it up on the roof of my shop Smile

Van just left, customer is smiling, I'm happy.

Time for a new camera....
