Noob question...why are there two needles on my tach?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Does the second one indicate where I should be shifting? It doesn't move.

the center button should turn and move the second needle to the spot you want to shift or what ever works for you. I set mine about 4k but its just more of a visual indicator .

on my VDO tach, I set my second needle to about 3500-3600 rpm, as that's pushing the limits of my stock 1600 motor.

Hmm, kind of a cool feature. I'm scared to rev it that high because of how loud it is...

Umm, well since we have the same year car, I'm assuming you have a stock transmission, and a stock 1600 motor. If that's the case, you could maybe hit 5000 if you have smaller tires.
I run 30x9.50s which shorten my gears and prevent me from hitting 4K. I only hit 3600 while on the freeway doing 75 mph.
Typically for a 1600 motor to go over 4K it requires a counter weighted crank and cam work.

Sorry to take over Tyler.

It's a bit streaky because the can had a clog, but the dirt will cover it up...

Hey Phil, got the fenders back on, going to leave the primer until I get everything set up on the car how I like it, then I'll think of colors. This is the only picture I have

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Next I want to get it out to AZ and get the seat mounts redesigned to move the seats up and forward a bit. I'm 6'1" and the clutch is still a bit of a stretch for me.

The engine was also built with spring-loaded pushrod tubes ( Rolling Eyes ) so needless to say it's leaking a bit. Going to have to figure that out.

Does anybody know if the stock headlight screws can be bought from Home Depot, or are they a special VW design?

Thanks,
Tyler

I'd love to man, still trying to get info on all the races and find some close to me. Want to start out with something not too long because I don't have a professional crew. Hopefully I'll see you out there soon!

Try looking into a MORE race or a SNORE race
post up when you want to race,
if I'm not working that weekend I'll run an outlying pit or even your main pit if you don't have anyone
I'm sure some others with experience would be willing to help out also

The December 1st MORE Holiday 200 looks like it would be the best timing for me...maybe either of you guys would want to do some kind of team thing? If I can get behind the wheel I know I will be competitive, at least in my class. But I know there's a lot to learn about race prep and pitting from you experienced guys.
moved this reply to here I didn't want to shit all over the Baja photos thread

I work that weekend but if your serious about this, I can look into switching shifts with someone -can't promise i'll be sucessful though
I would recomend getting it up to a race and running it through Tech Inspection first so they can look it over and tell you if its legal to run ( although they will only be looking for saftey equipment etc.) you can ask them to tell you if any of the other things will pass Post race inspection or maybe set up a meeting with someone from A.R.T.S.to go over your car ahead of time
I raced 5-1600, Class 9, class 1-1600 and 2-1600
and I built alot of 5-1600,1-1600, 2-1600,class 9,class 10, class 12 and also 2 class 7 trucks and I made IRS trailing arms for class 11 but never a complete class 11
so I don't know what all of the specific rules are and all of the do's & don'ts are hopefully you have read the SCORE rule book to get you close enough

you don't want to show up to a race thinking your ready to race and have them tell you your cage is illegal or fenders or whatever then have to scramble all night getting it legal
once you get their OK I can meet with you somewhere after work one day (I work near Long Beach) and look over your car and see if there is anything you need as far as spares, tools, tips and tricks or just getting it ready to survive without loosing all your parts and making the desert look like a yard sale

also a good idea to run a lap after a race (very early the next morning while the course markers are still up)to see what kind of terrain you will likely be beating your car through and see how long it takes you compared to the rest of that races finishers

AirbornDad has some great suggestions there Tyler.

Like the one about running it past a Tech guy (like me) before you show up for a race only to find the car won't pass Tech. Or I could just wait and blast you out of the water at Slash X the night before the Holiday 200... Shocked This is actually something I recommend to anyone with a race car they haven't raced before. Even if they bought the champion car doesn't mean it will pass Tech again. I live in the desert not that far from Barstow (1/2 way between Victorville and Palmdale). Your Trig doodling pal Warren and I from SoCal could look it over for you. Or you could bring it by Tech during the Powder Puff race heats. While the racers are going around, we don't have other Tech duties keeping us busy.

PM me on here or Warren (3GTech) on SoCal.

Thank you for the very generous offer DustyMojave, sent you a PM.

Update: Got the headlights wired and installed, rear window is in, door seal replaced. It looks like a real car now...

It would be a shame not to race it!

You will have to do something a little better for an air cleaner. I run one from a backhoe or tractor.

Better as in bigger? Or different material? What's wrong with the one on there?

Looks mean! Are you going to have any issues with tire clearance on those front fenders?
