Cool build. I dig the wheels and tires. How many inches are you planning on chopping it ? I cannot wait to see pics of the sheet metal work. |
Thanks...
Probably 3-4"...it will all depend on where the roof sits back down and looks best. I am going to cut all the way back into the rear quarter area instead of through the rear window like a lot of guys do. I don't care for the "squashed Bug" look of many chops...I am going to maintain the natural flow of the VW roof. I also have an oval window section that will be grafted.
My first chop was on a 48 Ford sedan...which has a very similar roof line to a VW...that's how I kept the natural flow with it as well. _________________ 1956 Oval

After re-reading my build thread so far, I felt that I haven't gotten my true idea of this build across. My opening story was quite weak and I think the term "Volksrod" in my title may have put some people off
I've decided to do some edits, including the build thread title, so that folks might give it a second look.
I'd hate for this car to get dumped into the generic "Volksrod" grouping and overlooked. It will truly be something special when finished and there will be no mistaking it's VW heritage.
I tried spending some time over on the V@#$%rod forum, but can't click with the majority of them. Friendly folks, but not the same passion for these cars.
I chose The Samba for this thread because it feels more like home to me.
If you have been following along, please re-read the opening story...I have added quite a bit more info to it. _________________ 1956 Oval

Thanks guys,
Little update...but no pics yet.
The car has been on hold for a bit because we just moved but I have my seats and door panels at my buddy's upholstery shop. He is one of the most talented upholsters I've ever seen and I have given him full artistic license to do what he wants.
I explained my theme and picked a couple samples from some material he had...he is really digging the build style and assures me that I will be blown away when I see the seats. He wont give me any pics because he wants to do this big "unveiling" I'm really stoked!
Only thing I can say is I picked a material that resembles a well worn bomber jacket.
As soon as I have pics I'll get them on here. _________________ 1956 Oval

No progress to report due to my buddy Larry's 67 Bug going back together in my garage at the moment (check out the build thread on his car here on The Samba...Larry's 67 Bug Restoration) , but I have been tossing some ideas around in my head.
I have been going back and forth on how to progress on my 58. Since I spend so much time here on The Samba, I watch and follow a lot of other builds...plus Larry's car being so close to original has really swayed me as well. Anyway, what I'm getting at is...I'm seriously considering dropping the Volksrod theme and build a classic full fendered VeeDub. That's the kind I've always had in the past and I love 'em.
My new vision is the stock bodied 58 Rag in it's original factory color of Light Bronze, but I will run it on my restored 67 pan since the 58's pan is trash. I still want to keep the whole Dr. Porsche meets Ed Iskenderian thing and borrow slightly from the old 356's with an American Hot Rod feel but in a subtle way as to not detract from the classic lines of the Bug.
I'm also seeing it sitting low on big 'n littles wrapped around a set of BRM's. _________________ 1956 Oval
