Precisely correct. Also, it's because the end-user can very easily put bulbs of greater wattage/brightness than allowed in the Vehicle Code.

I recently moved back to Texas, I guess I never changed my location on here,

But it's only the bulb that needs the right voltage? I read somewhere that they should be 55/60 or something like that right?

Yeah, but I'm thinking you'll not find anything but sealed beams at O'Reilly's. As mentioned previously in this thread, most 7" assemblies for replaceable halogen bulbs are not technically street-legal in the USA. So you only typically see sealed beams at most parts retailers.

I was surprised that the O'reilly site pulled up 12V bulbs for 1965...

worst case scenario I'll just change back to stock for inspection, I doubt that a cop could tell the difference and would be able to tell that they are illegal.

OK, old thread and not directly related to the most recent comments but here are photos of the LHD and RHD drive H4 lens. You can see the difference in the cut of the lens.

Apparently the people at O'Reilleys need to have the car make to be able to find the right part, so does anyone know what headlight assembly that will work for my 65 Ghia, maybe from a super beetle??

i just bought these Cibie Z Beam Reproductions:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Glass lens and housing made in India, German H4 bulb

Looks like a real, quality part!
They also carry the European "E-code" designation which is from what I understand, a strict code on beam direction and is required on all European automobiles
We'll see how they look hooked up !

Check out the classicgarage.com. Their on the east coast. I had considered them but had previously bought a pair of the AutoPal's and were disappointed with the light pattern. They look cool, though. Having used all the major H4's over the years, I decided on the Cibie's thru Daniel Stern. This is a perfect example of you get what you pay for.

It looks like for the RHD lens I can either buy from the Australian outlet (more expensive + shipping) or find a source here in the UK which I've failed to find so far.

Hi John, can you please advise the details of this Australian outlet?

Sorry to revive this old thread, but didn't see the need to make a new one!

Just in case anyone is looking for a smoking deal on some great H4 conversions, Toyota has been selling a retrofit kit for their old FJ40s since they stopped stocking sealed beams. The part number is 81110-60P70, and it includes a set of Japanese made Koito E-code H4 housings, bulbs, and a relay/wiring kit.

The trick is to see if your local Toyota dealer can order these in - my local dealer actually has a discount parts website so I got a slight discount and also didn't have to pay for shipping since I picked them up. I'm going to warn you though: you'll likely be waiting a number of weeks since they're almost always on backorder. It was worth the wait, because total cost for all of this was $18.54!

Yes, these are flat fronted H4 housings and they're Japanese so I don't anticipate most of the VW purists will be interested. That being said, it's hard to beat a high quality set of H4 lights for about $20, so it may be of interest to some. Not to mention, the Koito H4 is supposed to be the best - even better than Hella, Cibie, and Bosch (Daniel Stern is an expert in the field of automotive lighting):

Thanks for posting this tip. Just ordered a set from my local toyota dealer. Looks like backorder is only to cause about a week and a half's delay.

Will let the group know how it goes if you're interested.
