Has anyone made fender liners for the front wheel wells? Maybe something out of plastic.[/quote] _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |

One of the European guys ...either dutch, German or maybe even Albert from Canada successfully made some....they posted in the Shoptalk forums 411/412 forums I believe.
Personally I prefer to heavily and smoothly undercoat on a 411/412 after derusting. I feel that the areas under fender liners never get to dry properly and the water and mud eventually gets behind them anyway. Ray |

Bedliner it underneath and never worry again. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Damn!...Tram .... thats exactly what I was planning to use. The reason why I do not want a liner/barrier is that the forward area up near the turn signal lights is very narrow. Mud cannot collect in that area...but its easy to wash out as long as th undercoating is smooth and hard. The most important thing is that these areas quickly dry after they are wet.
A fender liner will never seal perfectly...and makes it hard to keep this area clean. Ray |

Those sound interesting. I think those are the ones i remember.
bed liner works verywell and will not leak. The issue is preparation in advance. This is not something I would do after the car is finished and has been on the road for a while. Its a process in conjunction with rebuilding and prep for paint.
A couple of things I am doing differntly will insure that a product like a bedliner will be superior to the undercoating that came on these cars. Also understand that the bedliner is NOT the primary sealing and undercoating. its a hard layer that protects against rocks and abrasion, sheds snow and ice easier and will be much easier to clean.
The problem with the original undercoating on these cars is that (a) it was rigid and over the years it shrunk, cracked and leaked and (b) the undercoating was the primary seal over fender to chassis joints. When the undercoating finally cracks and leaks....the metal joints are unprotetced and rust from the inside out.
On my car.....the fenders and doors will be dip stripped clean, then pre-rusted on the surface, then rust converted with phosphoric acid....then zinc chromated on the inside areas before complete primer for paint.
The joints between body and chassis will be completely sealed with marine grade acrylic sealer (25 year outdoor). Thats from the underside.
The top side. for fender beading will be cast in place, flexible, paintable 25 year acrylic sealer. I got pretty good at doing this with good masking techniques. It looks better than factory strips, will not shrink or pull out and will never leak as its attached to both fender and chassis.
My philosophy with fender beading is that the only reason it should come off is after a wreck. In that case...you need new paint as well. Just strip it and re-do it. The hardened vinyl strips of fender beading that the factory used were a weak point....rust waiting to happen.
The fender bolts will be sealed as well. After all that.....truck bed liner would be an ideal under coating. Ray |

Bringing this back up....Lahti what do you think of the Lokari liners? I am thinking about getting the front ones but I am not sure about the rear. I will be driving in the winter.
Thanks. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |

Working on stripping my chassis now. Over the past couple years I have decided to use no standard under coat. The original hard undercoat held up very well...but shrinks cracks and gets porous. After I grind it off to bare metal....I will be using an epoxy primer and then 3 epoxy ceramic top coats. It will be sealed, hard and slick. Should be very abrasion resistant and easy to keep clean.
Yes...the forward side of the fenders will load up with ice in winter but if properly sealed and coated they should have no issues. I have kind of gone away from the fender liner thought. But it will be interesting to see how those work for you. Ray |

The fender liners have worked perfectly. I removed the one from the drivers side just recently as i installed an antenna. There were absolutely no mud or dirt behind the liner and the body panels were completely dry. I highly recommend installing the fender liners if you are goin to use these cars as a daily driver. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Here's couple of pics of the fender liner I took today.
The edges of the liner are finished with rubber strip. The liner is tensioned to its place and only needs four screws to hold them in. I haven't had any rubbing problems with 175/65 tires and wheels with different offset (34 i believe) than original. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

I agree to that, I have the Lokari liners on my 914 and no mud builds up behind, only thing is that they were a PITA to fit the 1st time...w e r y tight...had to trim them a little but thats all and might not be the case for the 411 ones.

These were easy to install. They are a tight fit and it took a while to understand how they are supposed to sit in the wheel well. But once you find the correct position they stay in place even without the screws (made some test drives this way to check the fitment). _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

I got my lokari liners in. Lahti, can you post pictures of yours. I am trying to figure out best way to install these since they are not predrilled. Also doffers yours only have 1 L bracket per side. The 8nstructions mention having two per side. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! after studying lahti's picts I am guessing I use the brackets on the rear(?) it looks like I can directly screw the liner onto the body in the front. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... I guess they send the L-brackets just as a standard equipment. The brackets are not needed when installing the front liners. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Thanks Lahti i had been trying to figure out what where they put them the instructions talk about having them in the front and the rear of the liner so to just get two when they are not even needed is a little confusing. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant...
