Sounds like one of those warm and fuzzy battery commercials, was there a film crew following you?, if not why?
I agree with Skills, good for you, definitely a worthy cause. And my garages became pony barns as well, never saw that coming but I never had an issue with it, kinda cool actually. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hey, thanks for the kind words folks. No donations accepted here; just throw a coin or two in your local fountain. We collected $14k on our last sweep. (Yes, you read that right.)
Today I had a few hours to spare so I drove to a "nice shady spot" to paint and refresh the instrument control knob details.
At first it seemed easy enough; I was doing hand stretches and finger exercises all day to steady my hands. As it turns out, the factory paint grooves are no quite enough to guide my trembles. Here's my setup, with the Volkswagen Testors model rocket paint mixture I cooked up last night with a splash of almond white Rustoleum Enamel. Note the Rancho Performance Transaxle transaxle shipping padding guarding my custom Volkswagen Bus Volkswagen bus quilt...
Yeah, this is ten minutes in. Yikes.
No amount of finite woodwork in college could have prepared me for this. I will never be a surgeon. Glad I did this before I got all my grey hairs and glasses too!
Well they're better than before. Dashboard detail is next week, along with flanged heat exchangers and my powder coated bumpers! I can't wait to show the bullet holes of bondo I found behind my immaculate bumpers. Screw shiny paint.
Oh, and that nice shady grove of a workspace? HA!

Robbie,
I hope you were wearing your short, cut-off blue jean shorts, wife beater T-shirt while drinking diet Coke and puffing on a cig during this "roadside repair".. lol

Bill, Bill, Bill.... Though I do occasionally make my love of cut-of denim shorts or "shants" known around here, I'll have you know I DO NOT smoke.
I should have gotten a picture of my bosses face when I was going at the front frame box with a wire wheel and drill....
And it's Coke, not diet.

No one and I mean NO ONE rocks the wife beater, cut-off shorts 'look' like Colin.
He's a trend setter
Funny side story, when he visited me for my appointment, we both looked liked poor, hippie, dirty, white trash when we were working in the garage. He did a road test in my bus, nailed the miss-having brakes which caused a good swerve as he corrected the buses direction. The traffic was pretty good and we were both laughing and guessing what the other motorists were saying about the bus and us-
"damn hippies, still can't drive stoned"..
"I'm surprised that damn old bus even runs"..
Colin had the best line, he said "they probably thought I dropped the roach clip".. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Bill, that story is fantastic! Don't know how I missed that post..
Of course I know about the shants and wife beater... I took that picture!
Anyway, today was detail day. Mom did her bug while I did the bus. She ran circles around me since I had thrice the surface area. And, you know, a roof to wax. I needed a ladder, she needed an iced tea. Alas, the price I pay for a 3/4 ton payload capacity....

Oh, and Brian, my vent window is damn perfect now. It's 100% waterproof and it stays propped at 60mph. It's a little hard to open at the moment, but the locking latch works AND it's waterproof. It's even getting easier to open it every time I do so…
Did I mention it's waterproof?

Because because because I actually get out and drive my bus? The high-pressure car wash nozzle is a most excellent way of simulating a west-coast storm, and it has the double-down effect of getting water AND soap all over your interior if you didn't nail the vent wing installation the first four times………
I travelled up to Newhall for this bit too; my mom's bug needs occasional attention in the mechanical department. She does oil and valves, but I did the steering damper and tie rods swaps last time.
Why, Jerry isn't smoking anymore? At least he's putting a better foot forward in the water crisis he helped create…

Impressive as usual, Robbie! What did you do to make it stay open at 60MPH? I was thinking about using a modified C-clamp to crimp down and tighten that rivet/hinge near the upper half of the wind wing. Need to do something about mine... they flop closed when a truck passes me going the other way. |

To be clear, I was talking about the rear left vent window. It has a glass piece with bezel that fits in a metal surround frame. A bottom peg of the bezel drops below the frame, where it is pinched by a clamp with a phillips head screw. If the peg is lightly greased and clean, a tight clamp will give it a fantastic feeling of static and kinetic friction while still being openable by humans. My dog is pissed that he can't bump it open with his nose now though. I'm still impressed he learned that…
The fronts also feature a peg below the frame with a clamp, but this one is a 10mm hex head to adjust tension. Again, clean and lightly greased is key here to hold the proper tension but still be smooth enough to open. Grease keeps the rust at bay, too. If you have door panels off, you can see the 10mm nut a few cm below the pivot through a hole in the door sheet metal. Reach a ratcheting box wrench up from below and tighten it until it would "hold" for a 65mph gust. The upper rivet should be free, and the tiniest coating of grease or liberal coating of wax will keep it rust free and smooth.

I see 20-22 on my freeway flogs between LA and San Diego. I saw a 16mpg tank when I had it pegged at 4,000 rpm for half a tank. I also saw 24.5 when I had a tailwind at 50-55mph for a tank. My jets are on the rich side of perfect for engine life in hot conditions. Idle mixture is 14.5-14.7 set by ear. Same jets as Colin's Chloe bus, 117 main, 125 or 140 air, 65 pilot, and 55 idle cutoff jet.
30pict3 CARB ONLY.
I'm happy with it, as the old engine got 24mpg consistently, since I could't go over 55 with the terrible vibrations. I FINALLY unbagged the crank yesterday to inspect, after tearing the engine down in January. Not a VW crank, and no balance marks on it. Sweet Jeezussssss…
Happy (slow) motoring,

I was thinking it was a 71.. wonder why they moved the headlight switch, seems pretty random. _________________ Robert in Memphis

Ever since LeMans got safe and lost the running start, all the cockpit controls on cars have been willy-nilly thrown about the cabin with no ergonomic interest at all. Why, back in the day, the key switch would be on the left so as you're making a flying leap into the drivers' seats, you can start the engine before your butt hits the horsehair. Then as you're laying down rubber through three forward gears, you can worry about headlights and shit later.
Volkswagen did switch the switch around '71, along with headlights that turn off when you remove the key, and the door buzzer for keys in the ignition. On my '69, when you turn the key to the off position, your knuckles bump the headlight switch and remind you to turn them off (if you have small hands) or actually bump the switch all the way in (if you have large hands.) Not a problem if your headlights shut off with key removal…
Human-centered design. I like it.
