I tapped the top part of the hinge to mount motorcycle mirrors. Only flaw in my plan was there's not enough room to spin the mirrors on without hitting the A pillar....oops! So I ground the threads off the mount studs and JB Welded them in. Yeah, I know it's hokey but I was too far along on the project.... now they're on there semi-permanent.
Now I need to lose those monster turn signals... _________________ Two wrongs don't make a right...

I have a 1969 and wanted to do the same thing. Did you just buy the threaded hinge pin for the 1967 and earlier and it fit? I haven't seen any threaded ones for post 1968 beetles, and mine is a 1969. My passenger's side door doesn't doesn't have a mount, so I figured I could us the hinge pin ones on both sides and score me side view mirrors on both sides instead of just one. Details please!

I threaded mine with a tap. After I did that, I saw the threaded hinge pins for sale but never investigated whether they'd fit the late cars or not. If they fit Hank's '72, I'd imagine they'd fit yours... _________________ Two wrongs don't make a right...
